Today six of our scouts joined Elizabeth and I to walk the avenue to fund raise for the lions dinner. We collected over $160 in checks and $180 (firm) commitments for table/placemat boosters in addition to a $100 in gift certificate. In addition we met a former Troop 139 businessman who committed to donate $500 to the troop. That's almost a $1000 in a short 2 ? hour walk. The best thing is we still haven't finished the avenue so there is the possibility of more to come. Please note the following: 1. Next week we will be walking the avenue again. I won't be here but Justin and Elizabeth will meet with the Scouts to walk the southern part of the avenue then go to the regular scout meeting. 2. There will be a scout meeting next Tuesday. This will be the last meeting before the Friday May 11th Lions dinner so we need to meet to arrange logistics. 3. Please sell all of your dinner tickets. ****What you can't sell please bring them to the Scout Meeting on Tuesday.**** 4. We need baskets for the tricky tray - Please confirm who will be donating Baskets. So far I have committed (2), Mr. Sciame (1) - Parents, we need your help during the next week to make the Lions dinner a success. The scouts are committed, see what they were able to do today. Please help them by selling dinner tickets to family members, putting together a couple of baskets or getting your friends who have business to advertise at the dinner. Thank you for you help with this. Please contact me if you have any questions. Long overdue. Having said that, I think that co-ed Troops are like co-ed Crews and Posts, where the girls are significantly more mature and capable of organization and leadership? than the boys, AND then you have the boys totally distracted by the girls.? The boys and girls need separate spaces to lead and then need to interact as leaders across units for events.? The other element of this comes down to the necessity of parents to support their sons and daughters in Scouting and history has not shown (with notable exceptions) that they do when it comes to doing some "gnarly" aspects of the outdoor program.? Frankly, I am disappointed with many Dads who can't figure out a pit latrine and the backpacker's cleaning methods of boiling with no soap.? I do know a few Moms who can deal with a pack in the backcountry. Whatever the program evolves to be it needs to build faith, citizenship, personal confidence, a career, respect for the work of others and some hobbies So we will see.
