New mesh nodes at William Paterson University provide network coverage into Fair Lawn, Clifton and other points.??
Matt Mullins, KD2MLR, President of the WPU Amateur Radio Club, Mark Sacharoff, KC2VYI, of the WPU IT Dept. and Gordon Beattie, W2TTT deployed the Amateur Radio-based mesh data networking equipment that Gordon provided.? This is the first set of mesh nodes on campus with more being planned to provide Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network (AREDN) links on and off campus.? External links are already working to the Fair Lawn Radio Club in the Community Center, and to downtown Clifton.? We will add more links into Garret Mountain Reservation and Rifle Camp Park and other sites in Passaic, Bergen and Essex Counties shortly.??
Gordon drove around the area and had decent coverage in high spots where buildings and trees were not in the way.? We will need to test more, but this is an exciting development for resilient networking to augment or extend the Internet when needed for public events and as an experimental platform to teach students and members of the community about data networks, radio communications and computing.
In January, the WPU site will go up another 15 ft to clear the VHF/UHF antennas at the site, which will enhance the coverage quite a bit.
Jess Strom, a WPU student and friend of Matt's, documented the installation for a class in a two and a half minute video.

Father Kolbe was a Franciscan Priest who founded Niepokalanow (City of Mary), a large monastery in Poland dedicated to communications.? Fr. Kolbe and his Franciscan brothers published dozens of weekly and monthly periodicals to promote the Roman Catholic faith and devotion to the Blessed Mother in particular.? At one point in the late 1930s, circulation exceeded one million copies monthly, making Niepokalanow the largest publisher in Poland.?


Fr. Kolbe was a Ph.D. level philosopher and trained physicist.? In addition to his print operations, he built a religious short-wave radio station in 1938 with the call sign of SP3RN.? It is believed that his amateur radio operations were extended also to his monastery in Nagasaki, Japan.


On 26 May 1941 Fr. Kolbe's monastery was shut down by the Nazi SS.? Fr. Kolbe was arrested and sent to Auschwitz concentration camp, where he was assigned Prisoner #16670.? In July of 1941, ten prisoners were condemned to death because of an escape attempt from the camp.? Among the condemned was Francizek Gajowniczek, a Polish Sergeant.??? Kolbe stepped out of line and offered his life in place of Gajowniczek's.? The Nazi commandant accepted the exchange and sent Kolbe to a camp starvation bunker where he was deprived of food and water for nearly two weeks.? Maximilian Kolbe died on 14 August 1941, hence our operating frequency of 3814 khz. ?


Maximilian Kolbe was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 10 October 1982.? He is considered the patron saint of the addicted and of amateur radio operators.??  I wanted to thank everyone for their help yesterday!!! 

It was as an amazingly long day and the boys did great!!!   Your scouts (and parents) worked hard and I am so grateful for them!

 Just so you know... all of your hard work paid off. Even with the bad weather..: the event raised about $700 to donate to the food pantry!!!  

You should be very proud of yourselves!!

Hope all of you had a good week! As brought up last week, we need to sell popcorn in order to get our money back. We need about $1550 worth of popcorn sold. Some families took home popcorn last week to sell while others still have the original when we first got it. This is a reminder to return any unsold popcorn if you choose to not sell any more ALONG with the money you obtained selling popcorn. I will be at the meeting collecting it.
