Friends in Scouting,
My name is Dale Hardt; I am a Midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy and am serving as the Public Affairs Officer for a Junior Leadership Training (JLT) workshop we are holding here at the Naval Academy. The JLT program is a day long program in which top performing Boy Scouts will learn leadership skills similar to those taught at NYLT through team building group exercises and small group classroom time. Unlike our annual Jamboree, participation will not be decided by a lottery, but will be determined by merit-based selection.
Who: We are requesting that your troop nominate 2-3 top performing individuals in a leadership role within the troop to apply to attend this training forum. There are only 30 spots and selection will be competitive.
When/Where: The event will take place on Saturday, April 16th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The entire event will be held on the Naval Academy Yard. For those driving, we ask that you find a place to park your vehicles nearby and walk onto the Yard.
How: We plan to instill leadership lessons in your scouts through outdoor team building exercises as well as classroom discussion time. The curriculum has been put together by midshipmen who have attended NYLT and various other leadership training opportunities offered by the Boy Scouts of America. This training will be unique to the Academy since it is put together entirely by midshipman and thus will have a military/Naval theme. The scouts will get a chance to see parts of the Naval Academy generally not open to the public and will have the chance to interact closely with midshipman who are more than willing to answer any questions they may have about the Academy.
Attached below is an application form as a .pdf file as well as an online google docs submission. We ask that you fill out a form for each of the 2-3 individuals and submit it back to us no later than March 20th.
Also, the registration fee per scout will be $8. It will cover the cost of their t-shirt. We are not providing lunch and ask that the scouts bring their own lunch and snacks to the training.
Please email me or Andrew Lee with any questions! (Especially if you are having trouble opening the documents.)
