There is a wake and service for Todd Dewey today up in Horseheads, NY. Nancy and I are heading up there now. Here is Jeanne's message, which I missed until this morning. Thanks, Gordon. I'd write more but I'm kinda tapped out right now. If anyone wants details, they can visit www.sullivansfuneralhome.com. I'll give you a call tomorrow, just to talk and maybe for a favor. Todd was surrounded by me, Charlie, his daughter Nicole, and his parents, while more than several relatives and friends waited outside his room. Charlie and I are having our good times and bad, but the love and support from everyone up here and down there have been incredible. Hugs and kisses to all. I am setting up a memorial Mass at St. John's for the Troop on a future Tuesday night. Details to follow. It's been a long spring and I miss you guys. Until this past week I haven't even had time to work out the Eagle Court of Honor for our last three Eagle Scouts. The Lower Church is available on Sunday, June 28th after 3:30 PM, which means that a 4:30 PM Court of Honor is about as early as we could schedule. Further, these boys have jobs during the week, and in Charlie's case 3.5 hours from here. The idea would be to have a simple ceremony with some specific guest speakers and not the usual parade of random public officials. Further, the boys have requested that Scouts of the Troop both current and past speak on their behalf. I know that the Troop has a trip that weekend, so we are hoping that by scheduling the COH late enough, folks will have time to get home, cleaned up and ready for the celebration. Please discuss this among the Troop Committee, Assistant Scoutmasters, parents and Scouts and let me know as soon as possible, as invitations and other arrangements need to be made. The Troop is very proud of them. Last night at the Committee meeting we discussed the tentative date for the Eagle Court of Honor. We think that it would be too much for the boys and their families, after the rigorous activities that are planned for that weekend's camp. As an alternative, we inquired and found that Sunday, June 20, Conlon Hall is available to use. There will be time to send out invitations and make arrangements, and the boys would be able to give whole-hearted support to the Eagles. Let us know what you decide. Sadly, the prior weekend is not a good choice for the availability of all three of the Eagle Scouts. To make things a bit more difficult, that would be Father's Day weekend, which is probably not a wise choice as attendance is likely to be a problem for many Scouting families beyond those of the Eagles. We were hoping that by scheduling it later in the day on Sunday, June 28th, that the camping trip would not have been an issue. There has been a successful track record of having celebrations after camping trips in the past. For many years we would go camping, return to Mass at St. John's and then head off to the Cathedral for Scout Sunday. Also, we have returned from the Weboree and had Eagle Courts of Honor on at least one occasion with great success. So given where we are with the calendar, the question comes as to whether we can move the Court of Honor out into July and have a good response. Prior experience has shown that July and August creates conflicts that diminish attendance dramatically. I'm certain that the Parish facilities can be found on many different days in the summer, but these celebrations are about people coming together to enjoy each other's company in friendship and fellowship. Summer dates seem to be more of a challenge for Troop families to attend than the acknowledged "rush rush" of returning, cleaning up and getting to St. John's by late afternoon or evening. Please consider these factors and let me know if we can proceed with Sunday the 28th. Thanks! J. Arrangements have been made and deposits have been paid for Saturday's horse back riding and Sunday's fishing & boating. This is a family camping trip and we have been trying very hard to have Scout parents and siblings attend, it is not practical to expect families to attend a Court of Honor Sunday evening. Another viable date would be July 25th the Saturday before the Troop attends summer camp, this would be a good date for the Troop attendance wise. We have 17 Scouts attending summer camp on July 26, so they'll be in town. I do not know if there are any Parish facilities available that day. It can hold a little over 100 people, it has a kitchen to prepare food, plenty of parking, and more importantly, they informed me that they won't charge us to use it for anything scout related, like court of honors. And I know the priests have a history of not wanting to go to other towns to participate in court of honors, but due to the tight schedule with conlon hall and the church, I'm sure they'll be nice enough to make an exception on the...3 mile drive. Please consider these factors and let me know if we can proceed with Sunday the 28th.> > > > Thanks!> > J. Please consider these factors and let me know if we can proceed with Sunday the 28th.> > > > Thanks!> > J. I missed it during my morning meetings. We will prepare formal invitations once we arrange for a time and place, but it would be great to have the boys and families of the Troop as our guests on that day for this celebration! It will provide some context for the Scouts and their families to better understand the life-long value of the journey to become an Eagle Scout. This particular celebration is going to be a bit different that many of those that we may have participated previously as the Eagle Scouts themselves have a few requests and surprises for all who attend! Please consider these factors and let me know if we can proceed with Sunday the 28th.> > > > Thanks!> > J.
