Building on the awesome VTUN script work and help from Randy, WU2S, ?Darryl, ?K5DLQ, Joe, AE6XE, and Clint, AE5CA, we now have Internet backbones connecting our BroadBand HamNet Mesh network "islands" allowing for enhanced connectivity among active developers and users of experimental and emergency applications. ?This will accelerate development and deployments when infrastructure networks fail, or when they don't reach a location in an adequate or cost-effective manner. ? By extending the BBHN mesh to a fixed, mobile or portable Internet Gateway that has a tunnel to other sites, key support elements and applicarions can be remoted from a stable location in support of a challenging field operation. ? This Amateur Radio-based "cloud" computing capability, originally developed on Linksys WRT-54 hardware by Radio Amateurs in Austin, Texas, ?enables wireless support of public safety, ?Red Cross, Salvation Army, and other NGOs deployed in emergencies, ?public events and drills. ? Applications include web, file, time, IRC chat, VOIP telephone, ?conference and video and camera servers. ? Randy and Gordon, W2TTT each have two tunnel connections from their respective "clouds" using AT&T Wireless and Verizon FiOS broadband connections. ?Each has tunnel connections to Darryl's "cloud" and more will be added to other sites shortly. ?In addition to the two portable cellular wireless Mesh nodes, Gordon has a mobile wireless cellular Mesh node that can be rolled up to a site in an operational state on the tunnel network. ???These capabilities will augment the fixed site nodes that can now operate on 900MHz, and 2.4, 3.4 and 5.7 GHz using Ubiquiti or Linkys hardware loaded with Amateur Radio BroadBand HamNet software thanks to Conrad Lara, KG6JEI who has been working with Andre Hansen, K6AH. ? Some special time may be needed to ensure than the sleds are in good repair. . If the Patrols need extra time to work on sleds next Sunday, we can arrange to use the maintenance garage on Sunday afternoon before the Patrol Leader's Council meeting. As mentioned earlier, there will be a Patrol Leader's Council meeting on Sunday, at 6:00 PM in the St. Joseph's the Worker room to finalize the Friday night dinner menu for the Annapolis trip AND to plan the Klondike effort. Including how many Scouts and adults will be needed for each, any supplies, transportation and other resources needed. It would also be good to specify how many of these events there will be, any training sessions that you might want to coordinate in advance along with the size of that group and resources needed for the training. One final thing to consider is how long each event will be, so that you can get a total estimate of planning and executing hours. I would imagine that you would have a training event for the collection phase and another for the public event phase that would involve both you and folks from the served agency. These kinds of ideas will beef up your plan for Mr. Anthony Catalano who will be your District Advancement contact. I am cc?ing him on this email and will also forward your existing draft to him in case he has further suggestions. I am also cc?ing the Troop email list to get the other Scouts going through this process in sync with the requirements of a project. Yours in Scouting! The Brigade has reformed and NESA is working hard to tie up the loose ends and prepare for the largest, most-program filled (and perhaps warmest at30-45 degrees) Jamboree in recent memory. Last night we finished up our formal merit badge counselor and activity coordinator training for the Eagle Scout midshipmen. I could barely contain my excitement as I reviewed the events the mids have planned for Scouts. Among them are museum tours, interaction with the Naval Academy Flight Team at Lee Airport, rocketry, military training, and of course research in our state-of-the-art facilities and labs. New to this year scouts will be able to train in Search and Rescue, program live robots, learn high adventure skills, and utilize our cutting edge Navy bridge simulators where scouts could very well learn to drive an aircraft carrier(scary I know). My staff and I are excited to meet and engage with scouts and leaders representing states as far away as Michigan and North Carolina. I am thrilled to announce the guest speaker, CAPT Reightler, USN(Ret.) who in addition to being an Aerospace professor here is an USNA graduate, Eagle Scout and Astronaut. Below you will find all of the important information regarding the logistics of our event. Additionally I have attached the schedule, pre-reqs, and important Camp Letts information. Transportation: Transportation onto the Yard is highly restricted due to security concerns. We have arranged transportation from the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium to and from the Academy. This shuttle will run from 0630-0730 and 1730-1815. Scouts will arrive on base and form up in Tecumseh Court for Colors by 0800. After the afternoon program Scouts will muster at Alumni Hall. Parking at the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium is $5 at the Taylor Rd entrance. Walking access via Gates are listed below. I recommend Gate 1, please not that bags are subject to search and you need a Government Issued ID to enter, so allow extra time for screening. An Academy map is attached. Food: USNA NESA provides lunch in the historic King Hall on Saturday and coffee for leaders in the evenings. All other food is the responsibility of the unit. From a three year study of cheap, but respectable establishments in the Downtown area I have comprised the Commander?s List: -Breakfast: Dunkin Donuts, My Favorite Muffin, The Iron Rooster(sit down w/ reservation), Naval Bagels(near stadium). -Lunch/Dinner: Chick-N-Ruth?s(midshipmen favorite, featured on ?Man vs. Food?), The Big Cheese, Pip?s Dock Street Dogs, Manga?s Pizza, Subway, Food Court on Market Ave, Double T Diner(near stadium) more info: http://www.downtownannapolis.org/_pages/restaurants/_intro_restaurants.htm Program: Unless previously contacted, all scout received their first and second choices for program. USNA NESA will provide BlueCards if scouts do not have them, but it is preferred they have them pre filled out. Each Scoutmaster will be given program tickets to give to scouts on the day of the event. The tickets are specialized for each badge. Additionally, I will include a few free choice tickets should a scout need to switch last minute. Tickets will be given out during check-in. Please note we cannot have any other additions to Digital Tech., Robotics, Programming, of Nuclear Sciences. Please ensure all scouts are working on pre-reqs. Check-in/Check-out: Please do not arrive at Camp Letts any earlier than 1800. The staff has class until 1600 on Friday, as such we will not be able to be set up at Camp Letts until 1800. If your unit arrives early there are many attractions in downtown Annapolis as well as restaurants to try. Additionally, please plan to check-out between 0700-0900 on Sunday to help the staff with Camp Letts inspection that follows troop checkout. Check-in/check-out will go in Fischer Hall under the large NESA banner. Please limit check-in to adults/SPLs. I will personally be the first face you see in the check-in line, look for the mid with the coffee mug. I will handle payment(refunds in cash), the rest of my staff will aid in T-shirts/patches, cabin placement, emergency info, and lodging. If your unit is not staying at Camp Letts we suggest you send a representative to check in at Camp Letts. Otherwise please plan to check in Rickover Hall the morning of the event. Uniform: The suggested uniform is Class-A BSA Uniform. Please remember to dress warm with jackets and layers. Note: for Military Skills Participants please wear sweats/active gear over your uniform you wouldn?t mind getting dirty. Our staff will run you through Marine Corps tactics with training rifles, Kevlar, and rucks and it might be a bit muddy! Tours: Should your unit desire a personalized USNA tour on Sunday please email the NESA Tour Coordinator, CJ Fennell at m171770 at usna.edu with a time and number of participants. Camp Letts: Attached is Camp Letts info general info, regarding fires, lodging, and restrictions. Camping Status: Attached is my camping status tracker. If you are not listed for a cabin, then you are camping in tents or have made other arrangements. Cabins: I have also attached a cabin tracker, most troops are sharing, please be courteous to the other troops if you arrive early. Youth Protection: I trust each leader is well versed in YP. As such please coordinate within the cabins for YP. We have Sea Scout Ships, Venture Crews, and conventional troops with female leaders. Most troops are sharing a cabin with another unit. If you believe you will have an issue, I have allocated areas of cabins for YP conflicts. Shoot me an email and we will work it out at the event. Emergency Info: A list of emergency info will be distributed at Letts, should you need to contact me urgently my email is m160474 at usna.edu and cell number is 551-795-0952. Please do not call me before 1600 on Friday afternoon. I have six hours of class before the jamboree and will most likely be in one thus unable to take it. If it is extremely urgent please just leave a message. Rickover Hall on the main deck will be the Command Center for all issues the day of the event. Fischer Cabin will be the Command Center at Letts. As always, please do not hesitate to ask any questions or bring up any concerns to me. I speak for all of USNA NESA when I say we excited to finally meet your troops and serve you. After they left I noticed they failed to clean up after themselves. I am assuming the 6 or so 2 liter bottles of soda left there was theirs. They also failed to wipe down the big heavy metal desk and push it back to the wall. There were also 2 cans of cola on the chairs. I did dispose of all the soda but did not clean the desk & move it. They also need to be told there should be no activity near the altar area. Gordon needs to be aware of this. -Jim Sent from my iPhone From w2ttt at att.net Mon Jan 12 23:25:18 2015 From: w2ttt at att.net (w2ttt at att.net) Date: Mon, 12 Jan 2015 23:25:18 -0500 Subject: [Troop139] Troop 139 Notes - 13 January, 2015 Message-ID: Hi Folks! Barfoot died Remember the guy who wouldn't take the flag pole down on his Virginia property a while backYou might remember the news story several months ago about a crotchety old man in Virginia who defied his local Homeowners Association, and refused to take down the flag pole on his property along with the large American flag he flew on it. Now we learn who that old man was. On June 15, 1919, Van T. Barfoot was born in Edinburg , Texas . That probably didn't make news back then. But twenty-five years later, on May 23, 1944, near Carano , Italy , that same Van T. Barfoot, who had in 1940 enlisted in the U.S. Army, set out alone to flank German machine gun positions from which gunfire was raining down on his fellow soldiers. His advance took him through a minefield but having done so, he proceeded to single-handedly take out three enemy machine gun positions, returning with 17 prisoners of war. ? And if that weren't enough for a day's work,?he later took on and destroyed three German tanks sent to retake the machine gun positions. ? That probably didn't make much news either, given the scope of the war, but it did earn Van T. Barfoot, who retired as a Colonel after also serving in Korea and Vietnam , a well deserved?Congressional Medal of Honor. ? ? ? What did make news...Was hisNeighborhood Association's quibblewith how the 90-year-old veteran chose to fly the American flag outside his suburban Virginia home. Seems the HOA rules said it was OK to fly a flag on a house-mounted bracket, but, for decorum, items such as Barfoot's 21-foot flagpole were "unsuitable". ? ? ? ? ? Van Barfoot had been denied a permit for the pole, but erected it anyway and was facing court action unless he agreed to take it down. ? Then the HOA story made national TV, and the Neighborhood Association rethought its position and agreed to indulge this aging hero who dwelt among them. "In the time I have left", he said to the Associated Press, "I plan to continue to fly the American flag without interference." As well he should. And if any of his neighbors had taken a notion to contest him further, they might have done well to read his Medal of Honor citation first. Seems it indicates Mr. Van Barfoot wasn't particularly good at backing down. ? ? If you got this email and didn't pass it on - guess what - you need your butt kicked I sent this to you, because I didn't want MY butt kicked! Do the right thing! WE ONLY LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE! AND, BECAUSE OF OLD MEN LIKE VAN BARFOOT! ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? . __,_._,___ ? ? Click Here!
