A colleague at work, Steve Triano shared this with me. It reminded me of how blessed we are as a Troop family as what you see in this video happens among our Scouts all the time. Perhaps these acts of thoughtfulness are smaller, and not on an athletic field, but you see it every week among the boys, even though, they often "act like boys"! Have a blessed weekend! I need a final list of who is going to ScoutFest in Alpine next weekend. I plan to arrive in the morning on Friday, but you are welcome to come as soon as you get out of work and school. We have a limited number of parking passes and Troop gear will need to be brought up by others as my car is already full. Depending on the weather forcast, we will need someone with a large vehicle to bring up the Popups and the 10x20 ft tent shelter we use for the Carnival. This is a pricey event and we need an accurate headcount of both Scouts and adults who will be participating. Remember, that driving into GNYC Camp Alpine on Rt. 9W becomes a real issue due to limited parking passes (which I haven't seen yet!). Please circulate this email to all concerned on FB and text channels and DO NOT LET THIS GO UNTIL TUESDAY. We need the answer over this weekend in order to know if we need to buy more slots. For reference, we have 20 Scouts and adults committed to the event, but I don't know who you are. Please help by getting this resolved ASAP. Also, on Tuesday night we need to make some more progress on the garage and also ensure that everyone has a ride up to Alpine on Friday and that we have obtained food which the Troop will purchase. We also need to know if we are going to have interest in the Ad Altare Dei or Pius XII Catholic Scouting Award programs and classes this fall into the early winter. Finally, please get your dues of $150 in ASAP unless you have paid them since the new year for the 2014-2015 cycle. They were due in September. Yours in Scouting! Gordon Beattie 201.314.6964 Subject: 2015 USNA NESA Jamboree Selection Unit Leaders, Congratulations on being accepted for the 2015 Naval Academy NESA STEM Merit Badge Jamboree held from Jan. 16-18th, 2015 with camping at YMCA Camp Letts. The Naval Academy community looks forward to hosting your troop/crew/ship as your scouts and scouters explore the exciting fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in our state-of-the-art-facilities. This year the NESA staff has been working tirelessly to provide the best program possible. Program Details: This year?s program has seen many changes from last year. Based on Scout and Scoutmaster Feedback we are pleased to announce the 2015 Program. Program will be conducted during two program periods, morning and afternoon. Each Scout/Scouter will have the opportunity to earn or attend two merit badges or trainings. Merit Badges: Merit Badges serve as the core of our program. The badges will be taught by qualified midshipmen counselors studying disciplines within the scope of the merit badge. In early November the NESA Staff will release the pre-requisite requirements for merit badges based on counselor review. This year?s offerings are: Engineering, Chemistry, Aviation, Space Exploration, Digital Technology(new), Nuclear Science, Oceanography, Weather, Electronics, Electricity, Energy, Radio, Robotics, Medicine, Programming(new), and Search and Rescue (new). Specialty: In lieu of merit badges, scouts can elect to fill their program period with one of our specialty programs. NOVA Shoot: The NOVA Award is a BSA award for STEM that is offered in four variations (similar in style to merit badge) with an all-encompassing award called the Super-NOVA. NESA will provide program for the ?Shoot!? NOVA Award. The NOVA is science intensive and requires near 3 hours of prerequisites and a corequisite of either the Aviation, Robotics, Space Exploration, or Weather merit badges. The NOVA Award is at the forefront of BSA?s initiative to encourage STEM study. Additional information is available at http://www.scouting.org/stem/Awards.aspx. Military Skills: The Military Skills program will introduce scouts to the military curriculum taught at the Academy. As in previous years the scouts will learn squad combat tactics and basic group movement techniques with rubber rifles. Scouts are introduced to the role the US Marine Corps plays in modern warfighting. New to this year, scouts will learn the basics of seamanship and navigation in a Navy immersion program. Scouts will learn what it is like to be a 21st Century sailor in the World?s finest Navy. Due to the outdoor nature of the event, we recommend bringing warm clothes and athletic shoes. High Adventure Prep: As part of summer training, midshipmen serve in leadership capacities at both Northern Tier and Philmont. Midshipmen who have served as Voyagers and Rangers will advise scouts and leaders on how to prepare, what expect, and give tips for successful treks. Recommended for scouts and leaders who are planning on conducting High Adventure this summer or those who would like to incorporate high adventure into their normal troop program in future years. Taught in conjunction with adult class. Leadership: Leadership is taught by the Jamboree Commanding Officer. This program examines the Navy?s approach to leadership and explains what makes a successful leader. In addition to leadership theory, participant will be invited to take part in scenarios and discussion. Recommended for patrol leaders and above. Taught in conjunction with adult class. Adult Classes: In addition to sitting in on the scout program, adults are invited to participate in a few specialized adult programs. NOVA Mentor Training: Taught by local council representatives, the NOVA Mentor Training Program will introduce adult leaders to the BSA NOVA Program. Additionally, leaders will learn about how to incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math(STEM) activities into troop program. The NOVA Award is at the forefront of BSA?s initiative to encourage STEM study. BSA Scoutmaster Specifics: The Scoutmaster Specifics is the official training for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. The course will introduce the role of Scoutmaster and leadership principles specific to the troop level. Upon completion of the course, adult leaders will be considered ?trained?. Due to the length of training, please note that Scoutmaster Specifics will take both the morning and afternoon program periods. Taught in conjunction with scout class. Leadership: Leadership is taught by the Jamboree Commanding Officer. This program examines the Navy?s approach to leadership and explains what makes a successful leader. In addition to leadership theory, participant will be invited to take part in scenarios and discussion. Taught in conjunction with scout class. Registration: Registration is now open and must be completed by December 1st to secure numbers in this year?s jamboree. As our interest exceeds twice our capacity, if your unit no longer wants to be included in this year?s jamboree please contact me immediately so we may provide the space to a unit on the waiting list. The majority of camping facilities will be troop tenting spaces at Camp Letts, however there are some cabins available. Please ensure all participants are at least a.)14 or b.)13 and enrolled in eighth grade. Maximum unit size is 24, with 18 for those in cabins. Cabin Guidelines: Cabin Camping is based on a first-come-first-serve basis. For cabin registration, your unit must have a complete Excel roster submitted. Please note due to the number of bunks in each cabin, units are limited to a maximum of 18 people. For units tent camping, 24 is still the maximum. To complete registration there are two steps: 1.) Return Excel spreadsheet with Roster and Program Priorities no later than Dec. 1st, 2014. Please use the form provided in the attachment and email it directly to jamboree15nesa at gmail .com with the document saved as ?Unit_Scoutmaster.xslx? (example: Troop89_Bell.xslx). Fill in the blue section of the spreadsheet. In the box on the right side I have listed the Program Offerings for this year. Please indicate preferences for each scout/scouter for each program period as well an alternate in case certain merit badges get filled to capacity. *Note that only one meal, lunch on Saturday, is provided in the cost of the Jamboree. Troops will have to prepare their own meals throughout the weekend. In mid November the NESA staff will publish all of the logistical details as well as any program pre-requisites. Several items are on our list for cleanups from folks in need. 1. Our friend on Simpson Ct. needs to have the contents of the bags either dumped into the street and a call made to the DPW Supervisor to get a truck to pick it up anytime or we can bring it to the town vegetative dump on Twin Boro Lane. Anytime soon would be fine. The point is that the plastic bags need to be removed from the pile, wherever it lands! :) 2. There is a five room apartment of a parishioner who needs to have the walls and ceiling fans washed before another set of volunteers paints the apartment for them. 3. We need to free up some of the garages in the next couple of weeks. Let's plan on that for about 30 minutes for each of the next couple of Tuesdays. Yours in Scouting! Enclosed is the first of three photos from our Scouting Jamboree On The Air 2014 (JOTA 2014) station at St. John?s in Bergenfield. Troop 139/Venture Crew 7373 under the guidance of Gordon Beattie (Amateur Radio Callsign W2TTT) the boys got to operate radio equipment and carry out conversations with stations in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Georgia, New York and New Jersey. The boys used readily available, low cost VHF/UHF radios as well as a state of the art Software Defined Radio on the ?shortwave? or ?High Frequency? (HF) bands. This provided the Scouts with an ideal opportunity to visually see and understand the characteristics of a station?s signal strength, type or mode and frequency on a graphical, computer generate spectral display. Boy Scouts from Troop 139 attended along with Cubs from Pack 123 in Dumont and Pack 111 in Harrington Park. Brandon and Bryan from Troop 139 are shown in the enclosed photo with Ben and Brian from Pack 123. I will send another photo of the Scouts with the equipment in my next email. Yours in Scouting! Once we get a list together tomorrow night, we will need to determine whether the Costco trip that Ben is making will be sufficient or whether we will need to get to Restaurant Depot for some of the items. One possibility is to have that done on Saturday by someone else. Let's discuss this some more tomorrow night at the meeting. Can we please have parents attend tomorrow night and get this squared away? Carolyn, Can you re-send the flyer to everyone so that we are all focused on the menu? Yours in Scouting! I want to thank Carolyn Miller, the mother of Eagle Scout Justin Miller for all her wonderful efforts in pulling together just about every aspect of this Tricky Tray Fundraiser for the benefit of your sons. There are many others who have helped, or will be helping, today and tonight to make this evening a fun and financially successful evening, but Carolyn had the vision and drive to gather us all together to make it happen. Please take the time to be there at some point today and/or tonight and thank her for her effort! Also, please plan on taking on all or part of a role in order to make future events a success. We will be having a post-event parent meeting to gather information on how, what and when things need to be done in order to carry on without her leadership, (but perhaps with her advice!) next year! In this way, the baton will be passed and Scouts of the ongoing years will have the means to have an exceptional program as those Scouts of the past have enjoyed and through which they have grown. Again, THANK YOU CAROLYN MILLER! Yours in Scouting, Gordon Beattie 201.314.6964 From W2TTT at ATT.NET Sat Oct 25 01:24:41 2014 From: W2TTT at ATT.NET (J. For more information, see the Senior Patrol Leader Handbook (#32501) and Patrol Leader Handbook (#32502A). Patrol Leader The patrol leader is the top leader of a patrol. He represents the patrol at all patrol leaders' council meetings and the annual program planning conference and keeps patrol members informed of decisions made. He plays a key role in planning, leading, and evaluating patrol meetings and activities and prepares the patrol to participate in all troop activities. The patrol leader learns about the abilities of other patrol members and full involves them in patrol and troop activities by assigning them specific tasks and responsibilities. He encourages patrol members to complete advancement requirements and sets a good example by continuing to pursue his own advancement. Senior Patrol Leader The senior patrol leader is the top leader of the troop. He is responsible for the troop's overall operation. With guidance from the Scoutmaster, he takes charge of troop meetings, of the patrol leaders' council, and of all troop activities, and he does everything he can to help each patrol be successful. He is responsible for annual program planning conferences and assists the Scoutmaster in conducting troop leadership training. The senior patrol leader presides over the patrol leaders' council and works closely with each patrol leader to plan troop meetings and make arrangements for troop activities. All members of a troop vote by secret ballot to choose their senior patrol leader. Rank and age requirements to be a senior patrol leader are determined by each troop, as is the schedule of elections. During a Scout's time as senior patrol leader, he is not a member of any patrol but may participate with a Venture patrol in high-adventure activities. Assistant Senior Patrol Leader The assistant senior patrol leader works closely with the senior patrol leader to help the troop move forward and serves as acting senior patrol leader when the senior patrol leader is absent. Among his specific duties, the assistant senior patrol leader trains and provides direction to the troop quartermaster, scribe, historian, librarian, instructors, and Order of the Arrow representative. During his tenure as assistant senior patrol leader he is not a member of a patrol, but he may participate in the high-adventure activities of a Venture patrol. Large troops may have more than one assistant senior patrol leader, each appointed by the senior patrol leader. Troop Guide The troop guide is both a leader and a mentor to the members of the new-Scout patrol. He should be an older Scout who holds at least the First Class rank and can work well with younger Scouts. He helps the patrol leader of the new-Scout patrol in much the same way that a Scoutmaster works with a senior patrol leader to provide direction, coaching, and support. The troop guide is not a member of another patrol but may participate in the high-adventure activities of a Venture patrol. Quartermaster The quartermaster is the troop's supply boss. He keeps an inventory of troop equipment and sees that the gear is in good condition. He works with patrol quartermasters as they check out equipment and return it, and at meetings of the patrol leaders' council he reports on the status of equipment in need of replacement or repair. In carrying out his responsibilities, he may have the guidance of a member of the troop committee. Scribe The scribe is the troop's secretary. Though not a voting member, he attends meetings of the patrol leaders' council and keeps a record of the discussions. He cooperates with the patrol scribes to record attendance and dues payments at troop meetings and to maintain troop advancement records. A member of the troop committee may assist him with his work. Historian The historian collects and preserves troop photographs, news stories, trophies, flags, scrapbooks, awards, and other memorabilia and makes materials available for Scouting activities, the media, and troop history projects. Librarian The troop librarian oversees the care and use of troop books, pamphlets, magazines, audiovisuals, and merit badge counselor lists. He checks out these materials to Scouts and leaders and maintains records to ensure that everything is returned. He may also suggest the acquisition of new literature and report the need to repair or replace any current holdings. Instructor Each instructor is an older troop member proficient in a Scouting skill. He must also have the ability to teach that skill to others. An instructor typically teaches subjects that Scouts are eager to learn-especially those such as first aid, camping, and backpacking-that are required for outdoor activities and rank advancement. A troop can have more than one instructor. Leave No Trace Trainer (new in 2010) The Leave No Trace Trainer specializes in teaching Leave No Trace principles and ensuring that the troop follows these principles on outings. He can also help Scouts earn the Leave No Trace award. He should have a thorough understanding of and commitment to Leave No Trace. Ideally, he should have completed Leave No Trace training and earned the Camping and Environmental Science merit badges. Chaplain Aide The chaplain aide assists the troop chaplain (usually an adult from the troop committee or the chartered organization) in serving the religious needs of the troop. He ensures that religious holidays are considered during the troop's program planning process and promotes the BSA's religious emblems program. Bugler The bugler plays the bugle (or a similar interest) to mark key moments during the day on troop outings, such as reveille and lights out. He must know the required bugle calls and should ideally have earned the Bugling merit badge. Den Chief A Webelos den chief can help plan and assist with the leadership of Webelos den meetings and field activities. He can lead songs and stunts, and encourage Webelos Scouts to progress into the Boy Scout troop. Order of the Arrow Troop Representative The Order of the Arrow representative serves as a communication link between the troop and the local Order of the Arrow lodge. By enhancing the image of the Order as a service arm to the troop, he promotes the Order, encourages Scouts to take part in all sorts of camping opportunities, and helps pave the way for older Scouts to become involved in high-adventure programs. The OA troop representative assists with leadership skills training. He reports to the assistant senior patrol leader. Troop Webmaster The troop webmaster is responsible for maintaining the troop's website. He should make sure that information posted on the website is correct and up to date and that From n2fwi at att.net Tue Oct 28 19:02:05 2014 From: n2fwi at att.net (Nancy Beattie) Date: Tue, 28 Oct 2014 19:02:05 -0400 Subject: [Troop139] Bed, Bath & Beyond Friends & Family In-Reply-To: <00ac01cff25c$ac291400$047b3c00$@ATT.NET> References: <00ac01cff25c$ac291400$047b3c00$@ATT.NET> Message-ID: Hello All!
