We will have a parent meeting on Tuesday at 8:00 PM in the Lower Church. If the Youth Room is in use, we will start at 8:15 PM when Religious Education is done for the evening. There is NO TROOP MEETING this week. The Parent Meeting is important because we need to go over a diverse set of topics including the Scout program activities and the adult participation and support needed to make that happen. Our young men had a great weekend on Retreat this weekend, despite some really challenging weather. In the end, they learned that they could be effective as a Troop, with everyone taking away some positive growth experiences for their minds, bodies and souls. Oh by the way.THEY HAD FUN while enjoying the satisfaction that they were the ONLY FULL TROOP to come prepared to work and play together, and they did it with style and grace! This is the type of experience that makes being a Troop 139 Scout different from others. GREAT JOB GENTLEMEN! From W2TTT at ATT.NET Sun Nov 2 12:38:56 2014 From: W2TTT at ATT.NET (J. Gordon Beattie, Jr., W2TTT) Date: Sun, 2 Nov 2014 17:38:56 -0000 Subject: [Troop139] Eagle Scout Jeremy William Beattie - A note from Jeremy's Mom and Dad Message-ID: <005e01cff6c3$e1c95f00$a55c1d00$@ATT.NET> Hi Folks! This week has been a bit of a whirlwind, but the personal centerpiece event for this week was our son Jeremy reaching the rank of Eagle Scout. He joins his brothers James and John and another eighty or so Scouts on the Troop 139 Eagle Roster. Nancy and I would like to thank our friends Mr. Phil Sciame and Mr. Gurz Gungil for their letters of recommendation and for joining the Board of Review Chair, Mr. Anthony Catalano from the Three Rivers District of the Northern New Jersey Council, BSA for their time in encouraging and reviewing Jeremy's work. Many others, both brother Scouts and Scouters, both present and past along with other adults took their valuable time to participate in Scouting and other areas over the years to make this day possible. The trail to the Rank of Eagle Scout is a long one, full of joys and challenges which build character in young men. It has often been inconvenient and a sacrifice of time and resources by those around Jeremy and the other young men of our Troop that have made a difference for them. >From personal experience, we know that these factors are overshadowed by the immense joys in seeing them grow to be wonderful young men. In the next 18 or so months, there will be NINE other Scouts of our Troop who will be candidates for the Rank of Eagle Scout, and each will need more of the same well-deserved support from their brother Scouts and the parents of the Troop. See the list below and you will more fully understand the exciting challenge before us! 1. Kofi 2. Reinier 3. Joe 4. Dino 5. Sam 6. Bryan 7. John 8. Sean 9. Sergio (Did I miss anyone else?) We will need to focus on ways to leverage the skill development and advancement goals of the younger Scouts as each of the older Scouts attain their advancement goal of becoming Eagle Scouts. We also need to be mindful that several of these young men are 17 and will need to be prioritized ahead of the others. This is a TROOP and not a Lone Scout program, so we will need to help each young man keep the "eye on the prize" and share the workload in support of the others' projects. We are also going to need adults (not the Scout's parent) to mentor each of these young men. If you are interested in such a role, perhaps in advance of your own son's rise to Eagle, please let me know ASAP. Don't worry about experience.it was never something that we were allowed to use as an excuse to not help out! :) We look forward to sharing a celebration of Jeremy's achievement with you, your sons and past members of the Troop sometime in the Spring when everyone will be available from far-flung places. Again, a hearty THANK YOU from us to each Scout and their families! Yours in Scouting! From W2TTT at ATT.NET Sun Nov 2 13:59:35 2014 From: W2TTT at ATT.NET (J. In the next month or so we will have several Amateur Radio activities planned including our licensing classes, part of our Holiday Flea Market/HamFest and a really fun activity on Long Island called "Ham Radio University". We also have some operating activities that every Scout, Scouter and other member of the Amateur Radio Community can enjoy! Please let me know if your Scout, you or another family member or friend are interested in these activities. 1. I will be running weekly (mostly) training sessions during part of our Troop meetings and if there is interest, on Sunday evenings for the next few weeks. We will review what you can do with Amateur Radio and questions from the tests. Free informational and online study materials for Amateur Radio are available via email. Please drop a note to me, Gordon Beattie at W2TTT at ARRL.NET if you would like to receive them.. 2. If there is interest, we will pursue the Electricity, Electronics, Radio, Computers, Digital Technology, Inventing and Robotics Merit Badges including the building of some basic kits. FYI, the Computer Merit Badge is being discontinued at the end of this year and will be replaced by the Digital Technology Merit Badge. It might be nice to have each Scout earn this soon to be "legacy" merit badge. In the future, we can also consider adding other exciting badges to their "technology" portfolio. 3. Our Flea Market on features a "HamFest" section on Saturday, December 13th in Conlon Hall. Not only is this an enjoyable fundraiser for the Troop, but there will be several brief (30 minute) technical sessions on "Getting your License", "How to Get Started", "Exploring Possibilities on the Air", "Mesh Networking" and more! 4. There will be a one day review class and evening test session on Friday, December 26th in the Lower Church of St. John the Evangelist Church in Bergenfield. We will start at 8:00 AM and and finish at 6:00 PM. Testing will be at 7:00 PM. I have free study resources available online for anyone who wishes to study for the test. Please email Gordon Beattie at W2TTT at ARRL.NET if you need the materials. Two forms of ID are needed and the candidate will need to know their Social Security Number. The Troop roster functions as one form of ID for our Scouts. Food will be provided for Troop members and their immediate family members. Outsiders are asked to donate $20 to support our Troop's Amateur Radio activities. 5. This annual event is an exciting opportunity, open to all, licensed or unlicensed! It is called Ham Radio University and is being held on Sunday January 4th on Long Island. This is a day of fun with interesting displays, activity sessions and interaction with EXPERTS in a broad range of areas. See this link for more information. http://hamradiouniversity.org/ Don't register yet, as we will need to work out the logistics for the day. 6. In 2015, we will kick off two Radio Scouting Awards from Venture Crew 7373. The first is the "Venture Crew 7373 Amateur Radio Clubs Operating Award" where a Scout or Scouter can operate from each of our Council camps and facilities using a unique callsign for that location. Prior permission to use the callsign of the camp or facility can be obtained by contacting Gordon Beattie, W2TTT at W2TTT at ARRL.NET or by calling or texting Gordon at 201.314.6964. Any licensed Radio Amateur with a use or camping permit from the Northern New Jersey Council, BSA for their unit may request use of the call during their stay. After the event, each authorized operator will submit a log of each contact containing the following information: callsign of the station worked, date, time, frequency, mode, power output and power source (battery, solar, vehicle or AC power). Logs showing at least one contact from each of our seven Council camps or facilities will be granted the Operating Award. Certificates will be either emailed to the recipient or presented in person if possible. There will also be a "Worked All Venture Crew 7373 Amateur Radio Clubs Award" for Amateur Radio Operators contacting each of our Council camps and facilities. For this award, submit a log of each of the seven contacts containing the following information: callsign of the station worked, date, time, frequency, mode, power output and power source (battery, solar, vehicle or AC power). Logs showing the seven contacts for the award may be submitted to W2TTT at ARRL.NET or via mail to Northern New Jersey Council, BSA 25 Ramapo Valley Rd, Oakland, NJ 07436 Attn: Gordon Beattie. A certificate will be emailed to the applicant, or presented in person, if possible, once the contacts have been verified. Club callsigns for the camps and facilities are as follows: Callsign Location NJ2CO NNJ Council Office or other designated Council event location NJ2CA Camp Alpine NJ2CL Camp Lewis NJ2CN Camp NoBeBoSco NY2CT Camp Turrell NJ2CY Camp YawPaw W2FMR Floodwood Mountain Scout Reservation Bonuses: K2BSA Boy Scouts of America Amateur Radio Club NJ2BS Venture Crew 7373 Amateur Radio Club There are bonuses for working or operating K2BSA, the callsign of the BSA Amateur Radio Club, and NJ2BS, the callsign of the Venture Crew 7373 Amateur Radio Club. Additional bonuses may be incorporated into future endorsements, so this information may be helpful. Awarding of these bonuses will likely involve a modest expense to cover the costs of materials and shipping. As we qualify recipients for these "bonused" awards, we will identify the costs and publish them. If you have any suggestions for further activities, please let me know. There is a Skywarn Spotter Training session next Saturday in Newton. A little over an hour from here, but worth the trip. This is professionally done training by National Weather Service Meteorologists and is available only at limited times and places. Some years, this may be as close as it gets to us. This is a huge enhancement for the Weather Safety Awareness training that we take online from the BSA and it also helps complete the Weather Merit Badge requirements. Consider organizing Scouts, Parents and other family members and car pool there. Please let me know if you are intending to go and follow the directions in the enclosed email chain to let folks know that you plan to attend. There is an online signup at the National Weather Service web site. If that gives you heartburn, there is also an email contact. Yours in Scouting! Thanks! J. Following up on Mr. Argueta's excellent email, we are re-focusing the Troop to the "Patrol Method" model that is the "Holy Grail" of Scouting methods. It involves youth leading youth. In order to be fair for the members of a Patrol, they need commitment from their fellow Scouts for their participation. Recognizing that Scouts have other activities, we are breaking this down to three month windows with November - January being the next window. Scouts who plan to attend meetings on a regular basis, and participate in the December 6-7 Trip to the Project Diana Site at the InfoAge Museum, the trip to the United States Naval Academy on January 16-18 and the Klondike Derby on January 24th will be put into a pool of Scouts who will be fully involved in Patrols participating in these events. Scouts with lesser planned/committed participation will be put into Patrols focused around the events that they plan to attend. If a group of Scouts has lesser or little planned participation in this timeframe, then we will need to come up with some alternative ways for the Scouts involved to participate, either in that timeframe (November - January) or in a subsequent timeframe. Eligibility for leadership positions will be driven by what the Scouts commit to do and what they do. Since participation and leadership are two of the best ways to demonstrate Scout Spirit, so Scouts need to consider that as they plan their commitments and activities. When we have used this process in the past, the participation in Troop activities improves, as does the enthusiasm of the Scouts, because they have an easier time planning and coordinating activities. In addition to the Patrol formation, we will be having all Scouts work on skills over the next few weeks for part of each meeting. 11/11 Basic Scout Knowledge, Knots and Lashings 11/18 First Aid Skills, Buddy System, Fire Starting 11/25 Map, Compass, Land Navigation Each Patrol will assess their capabilities each week and we will then improve those skills in December and January. Additionally, we will be conducting Scoutmaster Conferences and Boards of Review for each Scout who is ready for advancement in preparation for our 12/18 Pot Luck Supper and Court of Honor. We will also be doing some work related to Merit Badges during each of our meetings. Those choices will be discussed once we get a fix on the Scouts' participation plans. Yours in Scouting! Thanks! This documentary will be submitted to over seventeen film festivals around the country. Kudos goes to Mr. Argueta and Scout Giancarlo, for their resourcefulness. There was a review of thirty minutes documentary on the subject from Bergen County to Ocean County, followed by discussion. This documentary will be submitted to over seventeen film festivals around the country. Kudos goes to Mr. Argueta and Scout Giancarlo, for their resourcefulness. They successfully scrounged and obtained firewood for the event to give warmth to enactors to last entire night. In the early morning hours, the fire was going full flame, providing hours of warm moments, including some delicious s'mores. Please see some pictures from the event. We postponed the Patrol Elections until this week. Please plan to attend and also KNOW your commitment will directly impact the activity of the Patrol to which you will be able to join and also your advancement. The Troop program will revolve around these three outdoor events: December 6-7 (Sat-Sun) InfoAge Museum/Project Diana Site at Wall Township, NJ January 16-18 (Fri-Sun) US Naval Academy Merit Badge Jamboree at Annapolis, MD January 24 (Sat) Klondike Derby at Campgaw Reservation at Mahwah, NJ We will also be picking merit badges for the Naval Academy trip this week. Skills will build on what we did last week and add new ones if the other tasks are done and the first set of skills have demonstrated proficiency. This is a "building process" and will take time, but your proficiency will help you in everyday life, with your advancement and with the Klondike Derby. We will have a Patrol Leaders' Council (PLC) meeting on Sunday next week from 6-7 PM at St. John's. The Sunday night Amateur Radio class will start next week at 7:00 PM following the PLC. Just a reminder that we will be conducting classes in preparation for the Amateur Radio Technician Exam on Sundays from 7:00 - 9:00 PM in the Parish Life Center. Amateur Radio has direct requirements impact on 21 different Merit Badges, including about half of those which are Eagle-Required Badges. These classes will review topics covered on the exam and give some in-depth background discussions and demonstrations that will help improve understanding. I have a limited number of study guides to lend out, so please let me know if you are interested in participating. These classes will be conducted on most weeks between now and the end of January, depending on how the group progresses. There will be a ONE DAY review of all the potential questions in the question pool on Friday, December 26 in the Church basement. We will start at 8:00 AM and continue to 6:00 PM. We will be working though lunch and supper which will be provided. The testing will start at 7:00 PM. Just a reminder (.and pardon me but I forgot last night!) please send me your two choices of merit badges for the USNA by SUNDAY evening, as I need to enter it in our registration online by that time. There are also specialty programs for the older Scouts to take in lieu of a merit badge. See the lists below and EMAIL me back THIS WEEKEND. Further, there are adult programs being offered. Please send me your preferences for those as well. Happy Thanksgiving! Yours in Scouting! Gordon Beattie 201.314.6964 Program Details: This year's program has seen many changes from last year. Based on Scout and Scoutmaster Feedback we are pleased to announce the 2015 Program. Program will be conducted during two program periods, morning and afternoon. Each Scout/Scouter will have the opportunity to earn or attend two merit badges or trainings. Merit Badges: Merit Badges serve as the core of our program. The badges will be taught by qualified midshipmen counselors studying disciplines within the scope of the merit badge. In early November the NESA Staff will release the pre-requisite requirements for merit badges based on counselor review. This year's offerings are: Engineering, Chemistry, Aviation, Space Exploration, Digital Technology(new), Nuclear Science, Oceanography, Weather, Electronics, Electricity, Energy, Radio, Robotics, Medicine, Programming(new), and Search and Rescue (new). Specialty: In lieu of merit badges, scouts can elect to fill their program period with one of our specialty programs. NOVA Shoot: The NOVA Award is a BSA award for STEM that is offered in four variations (similar in style to merit badge) with an all-encompassing award called the Super-NOVA. NESA will provide program for the "Shoot!" NOVA Award. The NOVA is science intensive and requires near 3 hours of prerequisites and a corequisite of either the Aviation, Robotics, Space Exploration, or Weather merit badges. The NOVA Award is at the forefront of BSA's initiative to encourage STEM study. Additional information is available at http://www.scouting.org/stem/Awards.aspx. Military Skills: The Military Skills program will introduce scouts to the military curriculum taught at the Academy. As in previous years the scouts will learn squad combat tactics and basic group movement techniques with rubber rifles. Scouts are introduced to the role the US Marine Corps plays in modern warfighting. New to this year, scouts will learn the basics of seamanship and navigation in a Navy immersion program. Scouts will learn what it is like to be a 21st Century sailor in the World's finest Navy. Due to the outdoor nature of the event, we recommend bringing warm clothes and athletic shoes. High Adventure Prep: As part of summer training, midshipmen serve in leadership capacities at both Northern Tier and Philmont. Midshipmen who have served as Voyagers and Rangers will advise scouts and leaders on how to prepare, what expect, and give tips for successful treks. Recommended for scouts and leaders who are planning on conducting High Adventure this summer or those who would like to incorporate high adventure into their normal troop program in future years. Taught in conjunction with adult class. Leadership: Leadership is taught by the Jamboree Commanding Officer. This program examines the Navy's approach to leadership and explains what makes a successful leader. In addition to leadership theory, participant will be invited to take part in scenarios and discussion. Recommended for patrol leaders and above. Taught in conjunction with adult class. Adult Classes: In addition to sitting in on the scout program, adults are invited to participate in a few specialized adult programs. NOVA Mentor Training: Taught by local council representatives, the NOVA Mentor Training Program will introduce adult leaders to the BSA NOVA Program. Additionally, leaders will learn about how to incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math(STEM) activities into troop program. The NOVA Award is at the forefront of BSA's initiative to encourage STEM study. BSA Scoutmaster Specifics: The Scoutmaster Specifics is the official training for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. The course will introduce the role of Scoutmaster and leadership principles specific to the troop level. Upon completion of the course, adult leaders will be considered "trained". Due to the length of training, please note that Scoutmaster Specifics will take both the morning and afternoon program periods. Taught in conjunction with scout class. Leadership: Leadership is taught by the Jamboree Commanding Officer. This program examines the Navy's approach to leadership and explains what makes a successful leader. In addition to leadership theory, participant will be invited to take part in scenarios and discussion. Taught in conjunction with scout class. Subject: [Troop139] USNA Merit Badges
Hi Folks! Taught in conjunction with scout class. Leadership: Leadership is taught by the Jamboree Commanding Officer. This program examines the Navy's approach to leadership and explains what makes a successful leader. In addition to leadership theory, participant will be invited to take part in scenarios and discussion.
