[Troop139] Mesh Nodes in Bergenfield

Hi Folks!
A couple of weeks ago, I put up a Broadband HamNet mesh network node on my house using the Amateur Radio callsign, W2TTT-SW01. It has an Internet gateway for those Amateur Radio operators who might want to use the site as an extended access point from another node or a "mesh" of nodes.

On Tuesday evening, the NJ2BS-B1 Amateur Radio mesh network node went into service from the top of the Transfiguration Academy school building at St. John's. Tonight, we were able to get signals from a portable setup at 300 Oldham Rd. in Wayne to that station. More work on antenna alignment in Wayne will need to be done, but it is a great start!

The idea behind this "mesh" network is to provide a separate "mini Internet" in case there is no public Internet service, or to extend the Internet into areas where service has been lost during a storm or electrical outage. Over the summer, we will enhance the node at St. John's with its own battery backup and perhaps a solar panel to improve reliability. We can also investigate an Ethernet-based weather station for the network and feed that information to both the school and surrounding community via the Internet. The mesh node at my home already has a battery and solar backup from a work project that I have been doing for the last couple of years.

For those Scouts and Scouters with Amateur Radio licenses in Bergenfield and surrounding areas who might want to put up a mesh node, please let me know and we'll see if a connection can be made to one or more sites from your home. A review of the topography is both instructive and helpful in determining whether there is a line of sight path.

Yours in Scouting!
Thanks!

Happening right in front of me."
