Karl et al,
In retrospect, I believe that Karl is correct and that there is a problem
with radios that depend on PL to be transmitted by the repeater in order to
break squelch.
I will be bringing several licensed Scouts and licensed adults from Boy
Scout Troop 139/Venture Crew 7373 along with some of their family members.
They know to be at Memorial Park in Fair Lawn by 6:00 PM.
If you have directions, that would be helpful
I will need one pass for a friend who will be helping me monitor the welfare
of the mesh node/camera.
Tomorrow night, I will be at the Fair Lawn Club to work on last minute
preparations for the Fireworks. I will also have sets of the four foot
military poles available for whoever needs them. They are $20 for five
poles.
Thanks & 73,
Gordon Beattie, W2TTT

Hi Mr. Gene,
1) I will be there (no need for family passes - and W6SKT will stay
home).
2) people should test the programming of their personal radios they intend
to use BEFORE the event.
3) This event is loud, so speaker mikes or earphones may be useful.
Several HTs did not work last year and I think it is because the Fair Lawn
repeater does NOT transmit a PL tone.
So if a radio automatically turns on CTCSS (PL receive) when you program PL
transmit, you can key the repeater, but will not hear anything.
I just tested this with one of my radios - keys the repeater, but no receive
audio.
Gordon suspected the problem was de-sensing, and the workaround was to use
simplex, but I think it was a CTCSS issue.
Bottom Line: test the radios with a 2-way QSO, not just kerchunking the
repeater.
