[Troop139] Build It Night Activity Report

Dennis,
It is a pretty neat way to learn. It is classically not done enough at any
level of education, but needs to be greatly expanded. Too many kids
write-off specific knowledge, because their lack of understanding of its
relevance. The projects provide context. I am a big fan of "role model
education" whether it is done in person, in delivered pre-recorded media or
through tele-presence. Schools could take a page from the corporate world
and deliver top notch education economically through the delivery of
knowledge by whatever means is effective and efficient.

I am working on a plan to have the Troop do the Robotics Merit Badge this
Winter using the Arduino kits. It is one of several new Merit Badges
including Scouting Heritage, Inventions and Geocaching.

I will make a point of circulating the information via email for the benefit
of those who actually READ IT! :-)
I had mentioned this at Troop meetings during the announcements, but I think
we are going to need to ask the parents who are there to listen to them in
order to reinforce the messages with their sons.

Yorus in Scouting!
Thanks & 73,
Gordon Beattie, W2TTT

Actually, this is gist of the scouting program at Troop 139 --learning by
doing (with the environment in mind)-- and as the quote goes: 80% of success

is showing up...by the way, there may be more participation if there's more

than one day's advance notice :)

Rafael,
Thanks for the thoughts!
The environmental aspects are going to be evident at camp in just over a
week.
Piece by piece, bit by bit.
Thanks again!
Yours in Scouting!

Good Morning Gordon- Sounds like an awesome learning perspective,
similar to what I am doing for part of the Summer at Columbia
University: Project Based Learning. Based on the description of the
activities, this is best practice. Supported by sound research and
active learners. Maybe take it one step further and look at the
ecological ad/disvantages of the technology and it's life cycle/carbon
footprint. Congrats for the wonderful work you and all do to make
learning fun and engaging.

Sincerely,

Rafael
