Dave
Agree with your thinking...The path from Africa to South America is frequently shown as high probability with the Carribean similar.
As I look at the data from FM25, as the warmer weather moves in and the conditions improve in May - October to the EAST and NORTH EAST there is much higher probability to Cape Verde then the Azores but still think it is possible to Europe. My optimal path probability to Europe seems to be June-August so thats when we may pull together a high power effort in 2010.

In regards to working Western Atlantic DX, Bermuda/VP9GE, Bahamas/C6 , KP4, Cuba/CO and now PJ it is just a matter of time, I have seen great conditions but no one on. Maybe this effort will help... I will work on our KP4 frineds to get on this site.

73 and hope you and your family a happy New Year.

Joe,
It is indeed good to see interest growing here in the USA on trans-Atlantic VHF
ropo. I agree that the biggest impediment is the lack of operation. The optimum
ath appears to be Caribbean to West Africa, The path drops off the further
orth one goes in Europe, but much less so for stations located in the Caribbean
han on the US east coast. We wish there were some strongly active VHF DXers
long the west African coast and mid-ocean islands that were looking west.
I am still working towards moving to PJ4 in 2010. I hope we'll be there in time
o catch the 2010 tropo season. Admittedly it is a bit far west but will still
e a very interesting QTH for VHF propagation. I'm planning on operating several
m and 70cm beacons, and will be able to get to them within minutes. Its a very
mall island! The Europe beacon will be running 150 watts into a vertical stack
f 8 five-element yagis. With ground gain, the expected ERP is 30kW in beacon
ode. If the band opens or looks likely to open, the big amp will boost that to
00kW with that array. Switching to the narrow beamwidth yagi should yield 600kW
ut that beam will have to be repositioned for each specific path. The other
hallenge is that NBonaire is very low so the antennas will be with 75m of sea
evel.
I'll be sure to keep everyone posted of the move when it happens. My new job
here will be as the engineer at the 100kW TWR radio station. 160m would be fun,
ut I don't think I'll do to well with a high power MW station just a few km
way.
