I have traveled within the Delta Division speaking at ARRL Forums on
subjects that concern you most. Many have asked, "what is the FCC doing
about Morse Code?"
I would always reply, "wait a little longer to see what will come out
of WT Docket 05-235, which is in the FCC's hands."
On late Friday evening, December 15, 2006, the FCC adopted a Report and
Order on Reconsideration (Order) that wholesale elimination of Morse
code requirements for all license classes ends a longstanding national
and international regulatory tradition in the requirements to gain
access to Amateur Radio frequencies below 30 MHz.
The effective date of an FCC Order is normally 30 days after it appears
in the Federal Register. If that is the case, the Morse requirement
would not go into effect until late January or early February 2007.
The FCC can or has the option to order its decision upon release. The
effective date is not very clear.
