I just found this out, but it is with sadness I report that David H. Ransom
of Pacific Palisades, CA has passed away last November 5 of congestive
heart failure. Daves family was at his side at the end.
While he himself was not a ham, the amateur radio and satellite community
in general owe a great deal to him for his software that made tracking
satellites easy and effortless.
One of his best-known attributes is the DOS-based "STS Orbit Plus"
satellite tracking software. The simplicity of the application allowed it
to be used on practically any PC.
Radio amateurs around the world and agencies such as NASA used his software
to track satellites over the world as they passed overhead, whether to
communicate with them (or through them) or to go outside and watch them
pass overhead.
He supported and worked with many in AMSAT to make "STS Orbit Plus" one of
the most widely used satellite tracking programs for hams around the world.
I used his software to monitor Mir, the ISS, Hubble, and many AMSAT birds
and owe him the utmost respect and gratitude. If I had a question, he
would always answer and was never hard to get a hold of.
He will be greatly missed.
