At a time when cell phones are nearly as commonplace as automobiles, ham
radio still has its place during natural disasters like the devastation left
by Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. Gulf Coast. A difference is being made
through the immediate area by having members of the Middle Tennessee Amateur
Radio Service relay messages from the storm ravaged Gulf to relatives,
mostly in Ohio and Kentucky, to let them know victims are alive and need
financial help. Ham radio operator Tim Wiseman, who resides at 319 Marbeth
Lane in Tullahoma, said several local ham radio enthusiasts have been busy
relaying key information from victims to relatives about their status and
what type of help they need.
