Student Ham Operator Alerts Authorities
It was a 13-year-old student on the Vine Middle Magnet filed trip who
alerted authorities that his classmate was missing.

Cell phone service is sparse in the Abrams Falls area, but Jordan Webb used
a hand-held ham radio to contact another ham operator back in the Knoxville
area, who then called emergency officials to send help.

We spoke to Jordan's dad Friday evening, Gregg Webb said, "I asked Jordan
what he intended to do, and he said, 'Dad you never know, we may need it'.
Last night he charged his battery so he would have a good hot battery for
the trip today."

Jordan's had his operator's license for about 2-years and his parents have
piece of mind, knowing he can call for help from anywhere.
