Oh but they do, Greg. Here in the Southern region, the Corpus Christi National Weather Service Forecast Office spends a huge chunk of manhours every spring in their Skywarn and Hurricane Awareness seminars in which flash floods are graphically portrayed as the biggest killers in severe weather events.
The NWS has adopted a slogan from one fireman who saw the flash flood part of the presentation who simply says, "Turn Around, Don't Drown." This little blurb now appears on their website. I trust that soon, we will see public service announcements touting this slogan on TV. And speaking of announcements, there are the watches and warnings on wxradio. What, you say, no weatheradios? Thank goodness for the Weather Channel, broadcast band radio, ad infinitum.
Greg, good for you for pointing out this need. If you haven't done so already, hook up with your local emergency management coordinator and find out how to increase awareness about flash flood hazards. Chances are he or she needs help in getting the word out.
Enough of my own soapbox, I am getting dizzy at this altitude.
Peace,
