From the WKYT TV news site in Lexington Ky. Too bad we missed the =
boat in TN. If I seem to be hammering on this a little it's because I =
am. If this had been real where would we have been? I can't even get a =
darned comment on the list about it.=20
A state agency says a magnitude eight-point =
earthquake would buckle roads, destroy thousands of homes and kill =
forty-three hundred people in five Jackson Purchase counties in western =
Kentucky.=20
Sharon Perkins with the Kentucky Division of =
Emergency Management says a four-day earthquake drill did show that =
bridges in western Kentucky would be able to withstand the disaster, but =
natural gas lines running through the area would erupt and cause fires.=20
The agency started the drills on Saturday and =
based the fictional earthquake three miles south of Wickliffe in Ballard =
County.=20
The drills involve Kentucky, Tennessee, =
Illinois, Indiana and New Jersey.=20
Perkins says the main lesson learned in the =
drill is how to take advantage of amateur ham radio operators to =
maintain communications.=20
Perkins says they would be the key to staying in =
touch with communities hit by a disaster because an earthquake would =
destroy power lines and cell phone towers in the area.
