I'm cautious about this being an urban legend, but from reports on eHam and
K1DWU.net, www.powerham.com is apparently a scam web site run out of
Romania, and not Washington State.

If anyone has more information on this, please let me know ASAP.

Below is an email exchange which came in on the main QTH moderator
reflector.

******************************************************************

It looks like we have confirmation from a Romanian ham that PowerHam is a
scam, similar to another Christmas-time venture two years ago. They've
also posted several classified ads on eHam. Let's get the word out to our
friends so no one winds up with a lump of coal in their stocking this year!

Hi all Icom, Yaesu and Kenwood list members,

The Mobifon is a mobile phone service company here in YO and also an
important
ISP.
This mean that the www.powerham.com is a scam 100% and maybe they are the
same as the two years ago "Wilfrid" company which said to be in Munchen DL.
A warning message regarding them was put on qth.com site also.
Please take care about.
You have attached below some info I already sent to some.

Merry Christmas to all ahd have a Happy New Year,

Dear OM's,

A post regarding the www.powerham.com site and that company I found also on
a local YO site (http://f16.parsimony.net/forum27192/messages/6882.htm).
I was suspected them from the first time I saw their site.

They seem to be the same person(s) that scammed many hams two years ago
using the so called "Wilfrid" company which said to be in Munich, DL.
I almost to lost my $, but fortunately I gave up and did not sent the $, as
soon as they told me that their company have low prices because they are not
paying taxes!!!...

But they scamed many other hams, all over the world, some of which are
owning
very well known callsigns.

They are acting only on this period of the year as this is the top of
demands!

[I have made search on YO callbook at that time for the name I was given,
for
finding more info as the ones scamed to may get their $ back, but did not
find
that name in the YO callbook here (they seemed to be aware of ham
technology
and the specific language).]

I already placed warning on some YO sites
( http://f16.parsimony.net/forum27192/messages/6904.htm,
http://www.hamradio.ro/swap/vand.php )

Please post regular (daily) warnings on the swap sites about them, on the
"For
sale" announcements. Please don't let the swap sites users to be scamed!

The "Wilfrid" guys phone number posted two years ago was a valid one and
someone could be contacted at, giving "info" about the rigs but avoided any
further info, especially regarding direct contact.

You may check if the new phone numbers displayed on the powerham site are
valid/actual ones and if direct contact is ok or not, maybe you may contact
the authorities there and to caught someone and OM's to get their $ back.

Please pass to me any further info about.

I am sorry about, they put the rest of us YO hams on an embarrassing
situation. Thank you for your help to the ham community.

Merry Christmas to all and have a Happy New Year,

This operator of this Romanian website: http://www.powerham.com
claims to have the Icom IC-7800 for sale. This radio has not been released
(Icom claims spring 2004)

When asked for "terms", he requests a "wire transfer". Very bad.

He came to www.eham.net and registered as several different users (even
bootlegging a legitimate US call) and posted several Classifieds for
high-end equipment (FT-1000MP MkV, IC-7800, PW-1, etc)

We are keeping a close eye out for him. I suggest you do the same.
