There is a great deal of concern and hype over the Coronavirus in Ohio. It has prompted TMRA to act upon these decisions. COLUMBUS ? Ohio. Gov. Mike DeWine on Wednesday said he plans to issue an executive order barring public participation in sporting events and other large gatherings (Tuesdays news conference defines large gathering as 100 or more), and that a closure of K-12 schools could happen soon as the state continues to battle with a coronavirus outbreak. The governor?s allusion to even more drastic virus mitigation steps coming in the near future came as officials announced a 53-year old male from Stark County has tested positive for coronavirus, marking the fourth case in Ohio and the first case officials consider to be ?community spread.? Community spread cases are cases where the afflicted individual did not become sick as a result of traveling. TMRA at this time is cancelling the March 14th Great Lakes Conference along with the March 15th Hamfest in order to further protect our regular attendees and vendors. At the present time TMRA has had several conference presenters and vendors cancel out on our event. We at TMRA do not want to put on an event that you will not get your monies worth or not get the presenters that were promised. All those that pre-purchased tickets (for any portion of our events) will be fully refunded over the upcoming week. We look forward to your participation at future events! Message-ID: As you know, yesterday the TMRA Executive, Hamfest and Convention Committees cancelled our March 14th and 15th Convention and Hamfest events this year. This was a difficult decision for all of us, as we all have a great deal invested in it. The Hamfest, year to year, outside of being the primary source of income for the club to support both club and community ham radio functions, is also our yearly activity that brings everyone together in our area. The event is special in that it is the one local event that truly brings us together around our common interest in ham radio. I wanted to take a minute and further discuss the thought process that went into our difficult decisions to cancel the events this year. A ?peek? under the curtain on this process might help some people understand our thoughts on it a bit more (besides the obvious). There are indeed two different trains of thought, if you will, around this Pandemic (as it is now labeled). There are many that will barely leave their homes until the threat is gone and would be very unhappy attending anything where human contact with others is likely, and there are those with the other extreme that believe that the concerns with the virus are truly media driven and that the threat is currently much less than we see from the more common every day flu. We aren?t making judgements here. That is just ?not us?. When you are a club the size of TMRA, you are well aware that your membership will always come from all walks of life, political backgrounds and general philosophies, and this isn?t any different. We celebrate that diversity, but that does mean we have to listen extra closely at times when there are concerns, regardless of our own beliefs on risks and concerns, at times. Many factors went into the decision to cancel our event. First and foremost, we at TMRA will always protect those that we work with (even from the smallest risks, if we know they exist). Our AWESOME Vendors, our Forum Speakers, our Event Attendees and our own Members and Work Crews are all critical to the success of the event and in turn our club operations in general throughout the years. Like with our snow emergency policies (even a level 1 snow emergency will cancel events), we will always work to prioritize the health and welfare of these friends over everything/anything else, no matter what the cost. It, as it should be, is about doing the right thing (versus doing what we all really want to do, sometimes). This is no exception. Second, we always try to listen. We listen to our attendees, our forum speakers, our vendors, and others. In the days leading up to the events, we started to realize that many of forum speakers and vendors were not feeling comfortable (especially since the Governor in Ohio had declared a state of emergency and recommended not having large gatherings). With that, on Tuesday (just prior to the weekend events), we at TMRA also began receiving a high rate of cancellation requests related to the virus news. We quickly understood that many of our vendors, speakers and attendees were actively waiting for us to cancel our events (to also lessen their financial burden and risks, which makes sense). These cancellations, while thoroughly understood from our team, came with some additional risks for all involved. The biggest risk was that our attendees show up to what was supposed to be one of our larger events in recent times. We planned a larger group of fantastic forums and speakers and a larger hamfest size than we have seen in recent years. Throw in the ability to meet and get to know a few big name attendees, and it was definitely one ?not to miss?. When/if we didn?t deliver on that promise, we knew our attendees would go away very disappointed (even though most would completely understand..). With the increase in prices (albeit small) for this particular year (to offset additional costs), we expected this to become an even larger issue for everyone involved. We at TMRA quickly realized that, given the increase in cancellations, that we could no longer guarantee the same level of quality in our event that we believe we owe our participants and attendees. When you attend an event such as this, you deserve a fully attended weekend that is rewarding (in many different ways) with related learning, comradery, deals, new equipment, etc. We owe you that quality for your many years of support and participation! Lastly, we are very fortunate to have some great partners that we work with from year to year with this event. We?ve been able to remove a good part of the financial burden of our event costs (given the general state of affairs). We at TMRA still have some financial burden, of course, but it certainly could be much worse. Like any good organization should, we had planned quite well for the ?rainy day?. Albeit, we always thought it would be weather that disrupted the show. Who knew, right? Banquet Food is one of our costs, given the last minute cancellation of our event, that we were unfortunately not able to avoid. Therefore, TMRA is offering up the donation of that food to the Cherry Street Mission in Toledo to further support those in our community that need it most. Cancelling our event this year keeps our friends safe, while preserving the quality of what the ham radio community does (and should) expect from TMRA. As always, we thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing everyone at the event again in 2021! (look for more details in the coming months) 73, Rob Hall ? Hopefully your shut-in time is going well and all family are well/healthy. The executive committee met this evening and made some decisions related to our upcoming meetings and events. This list below is status as of today (March 26th, 2020). I'll list them in order (and the current status). *All Tech Meetings and Executive Committee Meetings (until further notice) *- *AS SCHEDULED, BUT ONLY AS REMOTE WEB MEETINGS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE *- These two meetings will still occur monthly, however, we regret that due to pandemic in-person meeting restrictions, and technology restrictions, these will only be remotely held tele-conference calls until further notice, hosted by Rob KV8P. If you feel you need to be included and/or have business for these groups, please contact Rob (KV8P) to get added to the invite and agendas. These committee members will continue to receive individual invites for those calls. *April 8th (April General Meeting)* - *IS OFFICIALLY CANCELLED*. It its place we will be having an "on-the-air" Social net on 147.27 starting at 7pm (since your schedule is free anyway). We'll focus some time talking about our most likely next event which is the "Museum Ships On-The-Air", onboard the SS Col. James M. Schoonmaker which is scheduled for June 6th and 7th. Join us that evening on 147.27. *April 18th ("I Have My License, Now What" class)* - IS OFFICIALLY CANCELLED. This decision was made since the 911 Training Center is no longer available to use due the pandemic, gatherings are still likely prohibited, and our main participation is typically from the currently cancelled technician class. *April 25th - NVIS Day operation (scheduled for Maumee Fire Station #2) -** IS CANCELLED IN THE PLANNED/CURRENT FORM. * There is a chance that the contest may be cancelled. Assuming it is "not cancelled" and goes on as scheduled, many of us will be giving it individual efforts from our homes for this particular event. We're planning to share stories and good "spots" on 147.27 throughout the day. Let us know if you plan to operate and join us for some commenting on 147.27 if you do! It will be fun comparing notes. *May 13th (May General Meeting)* - *Currently scheduled as originally planned, *but please watch closely for updates. We will only be holding in-person meetings, starting in May, as long as the guidance from the Ohio Governor and CDC allow for it. In the event that we are still quarantined, we may indeed do something different than the net in April, including potential for a facebook live or Zoom Meeting presentation. (watch for more). We plan to revisit and discuss the plan for this meeting on April 22nd. *May 16th - TMRA bus to Dayton Hamvention - IS CURRENTLY CANCELLED* due to the Pandemic causing cancellation of the Dayton Hamvention this year. We will ensure that anyone that paid receives reimbursement as soon as possible. *June 6th and 7th - Museum Ships on the Air -* (Operating K8E on-board the SS Col. James M Schoonmaker- Toledo) - *Currently scheduled as originally planned, *but please watch closely for updates. We are currently running this event as originally planned. If the overall event gets cancelled (due to museum or state restrictions) we would then completely cancel our event. (but let's think and plan positive for now!). The plan for this event will be reviewed on April 22nd and could be officially decided as late as May 27th. Note that is is also possible that, depending on status and restrictions, that we have the event (but with restrictions and additional precautions). Stay tuned. *June 10th (June General Meeting)* - *Currently scheduled as originally planned, *but please watch closely for updates. We will only be holding in-person meetings, as long as the guidance from the Ohio Governor and CDC allow for it. In the event that we are still quarantined, we may indeed do something different than the net in April, including potential for a facebook live or Zoom Meeting presentation. (watch for more updates going forward). This meeting status will be revisited and final decision made at or prior to May 27th. June 27th and 28th - Ham Radio Field Day - (Wolcott House, Maumee) - *Currently scheduled as originally planned, *but please watch closely for updates. We are currently running this event as originally planned as it is too early to know of any needed changes at this time. If the overall event gets cancelled (due to state restrictions or ARRL cancellation) we would then completely cancel our event. (A Wolcott House availability disruption would likely just move our event) In the event that the event location or gathering is not allowed, but the ARRL still holds the event, we will treat it the same as we did for NVIS day (separate operations, but coordination on 147.27). Again, too early to speculate. Let's think positive and plan to go on as scheduled (at least for now). Note that is is also possible that, depending on status and restrictions, that we have the event (but with restrictions and additional precautions). We plan to fully review this event on or prior to May 27th, so watch for updates. Stay tuned. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
