Message-ID: Hello, I owe everyone in TMRA a Fusion Repeater Update. *MAIN UPDATE: * The Yaesu fusion repeater is back after the upgrade at Yaesu and I've been busy getting it going on Wires-X on the bench. I've had some success and everything is looking really good here so far. *FOR FUSION RADIO OWNERS (IMPORTANT)* One important thing that has show up right away for me is that all Fusion Radio owners (of all kinds of Fusion Radios, FTM-100,400 and FT-1D and 2Ds) will all need to do both a FIRMWARE *and* DSP update (yes, these are 2 separate updates) to your radio in order to be able to take full advantage of the repeater once it is on the air downtown. Also, if your last upgrade is more than 2 weeks ago, you will need the updates (trust me, I did). You will be able to use the repeater without the most recent upgrades (more than likely, but no guarantees), but you won't be able to control it to different talk rooms with your radio. (Sorry 3200 users, you can't control it anyway as is my understanding as that control functionality doesn't exist in the 3200. However, you can just use the repeater in the room it is already active in/controlled to by others). Therefore, for FTM-400dr and FT-1dr, I will have the firmware on a laptop and a cable available for your radios at the next TMRA Tech and General Meetings. If you bring a cable and the files (listed below), I can probably also help with other fusion radios as well. I'll plan to bring a power supply with a powerpole connection for mobiles. I'm happy to help with the upgrades if anyone needs it. However, directions and files are available for both the firmware and dsp upgrades on the Yaesu website under each radio (files tab), if you'd like to do it yourself. See; http://www.yaesu.com/?cmd=DisplayProducts&DivisionID=65&ProdCatID=249 After selection your radio, go to files tab and go to the bottom of the page. The files you need and directions are at the bottom of the page listed under files for each radio type. You will need the programming cable supplied with your radio, and will likely need to first install the USB cable driver (if you never upgraded before using that PC). Grab all the files and be sure to read the directions for each of them before updating them. (there are physical steps of switching switches into program, etc. that have to occur before the update, so you can't skip reading these files) Our DR-1X repeater is currently at Version 1.10Q, so you will know whether there are updates or not. In the future we will try and warn our members and coordinate updates for everyone before we upgrade the repeater if possible. (more discussion ahead on that). I placed the TMRA Fusion Repeater (W8HHF-ND) very temporarily on my 444.2125+ pair (belongs to K8TTE-R/KV8P) in Holland, OH this evening. Please feel free to use the repeater on Wires-X (digital Fusion/C4FM only) if you can reach it ok (many people cannot reach it well, so don't be alarmed if you cannot). Please note that the repeater is currently linked to America Link full-time to give it a good test (As it usually stays quite active there). If it stays unused for up to 30 minutes (for the time being), it will automatically re-link to America Link (configured that way just for testing). However, full Wires-X linking/unlinking is available to Fusion users that know how to use it. Please pass along any comments on the operation (or questions) of it to Rob KV8P at (kv8p at kv8p.com). If you are not familiar with Wires-X use, please brush up before using it: The following link seems to be a good guide for setup, functions, and expected use. https://www.hamoperator.com/Fusion/FusionFiles/WB7OEV-Fusion-PDF-0018_WiRESX-Install.pdf As far as firmware and DSP, my radio was last updated in April. (check yours on the website) Thanks, and let me know how it works for you if you try it out please. We'll move it to it's permanent home downtown Toledo on 146.835 in a couple weeks. You can hear that result in short disruptive gaps on the transmissions currently. I suspect I'll have that resolved by mid this coming week and will report back. 2. *Clarification/Correction RE: needed firmware updates to your Yaesu Fusion radios:* While the repeater firmware was more recent, most radios last received a released a firmware and DSP update back in April of 2016. (Not a very recent release) Therefore, if you obtained your radio after April 2016 or if you did a firmware and DSP upgrade after April of last year, you very likely already have the latest versions. However, you should still verify that. Note: There is one upgrade document for DSP and one for firmware provided on the Yeasu website per radio, and you can follow the methods listed at the back of each to verify whether or not you already have the latest firmware/DSP software. Each of them tell you how to verify the versions after updates are done, which you can also use to learn how to check them. Witvliet, PE5B/5R8DS, and Rosa Ma Alsina-Pag?s. First investigated in the 1920s, NVIS propagation was rediscovered during World War II as ?an essential means to establish communications in large war zones such as the D-Day invasion in Normandy,? the paper notes, adding that the US Army subsequently sponsored a lot of NVIS field research, especially between 1966 and 1973. More recently, NVIS has become a popular means to enable close-in communication on Amateur Radio HF bands between 3 and 10 MHZ. NVIS can be used for radio communication in a large area (200-kilometer radius) without any intermediate manmade infrastructure, and it has been found to be especially suited for disaster relief communication, among other applications, according to the paper. ?A comprehensive overview of NVIS research is given, covering propagation, antennas, diversity, modulation, and coding,? the Abstract explains. ?Both the bigger picture and the important details are given, as well as the relation between them.? As the paper describes it, in NVIS propagation, electromagnetic waves are sent nearly vertically toward the ionosphere, and, with appropriate frequency selection, these waves are reflected back to Earth. In case the link for the research paper gets broken.. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11235-017-0287-2 PS.. Ohio?s NVIS antenna day is scheduled for April 22. In addition to 40 and 80 meters, we want to add 160 and 60 meters (a good 160 antenna should also operate on 60). With the band conditions in the trash, we need to work up alternative bands and plans to maintain communications across the state! These new bands should make for some interesting antenna construction projects, so get your teams busy!! Want more information on how to make a NVIS Antenna? Message-ID: The TMRA 146.835(-) Fusion Repeater on Wires-X is now ready to install at the downtown site after a few weeks of successful testing on 444.2125(+) in Holland (where it is currently working as a low-profile system, linked to America Link for digital C4FM use). It seems, after some initial tweaks, that the repeater is now working well on Wires-X in digital only mode and is quite reliable. We tentatively plan to install the repeater in it's new home, downtown Toledo, on the evening of Thursday, April 6th. Look for it to be live on Wires-X late that evening. Initially, at least, the repeater will auto-link to the America Link room where it is the busiest, however, users will be able to control it and control/move the repeater to other rooms to use it where-ever they/you would like. The repeater will reset to America Link nightly at 3am for the time being. Feel free to control the repeater if you know how, and assuming your radio supports Wires-X functionality and has the most current firmware and DSP updates. There may very well be a follow-on repeater antenna and amplifier upgrade (the repeater will only be running 5 watts initially) over the weeks to follow (after initial site testing is complete). However, we'll be looking for reports starting on the 7th. If plans change at all, it will be posted here and via the TMRA email list. Also, going forward, we will be working to keep the repeater firmware up to date to support the latest functions and features. Therefore, you will want to keep your radios up to date as well. We will try to announce all new radio firmware and DSP on this list (as we learn of them) and the TMRA facebook page as well, to help users prepare, in the event of available upgrades. http://systemfusion.yaesu.com/hri-200/ TMRA Technical Committee From rhall987 at robhall.org Thu Mar 30 23:27:37 2017 From: rhall987 at robhall.org (Robert Hall) Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2017 23:27:37 -0400 Subject: [TMRA] 2 new ham bands! :) Message-ID: http://cqnewsroom.blogspot.com/2017/03/flash-fcc-approves-new-mflf-ham-bands.html From stevebellner at gmail.com Thu Mar 30 19:08:31 2017 From: stevebellner at gmail.com (Steve Bellner) Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2017 19:08:31 -0400 Subject: [TMRA] Fwd: Geomagnetic Storm Underway In-Reply-To: <3cf38e87-800d-45cc-a5fb-1cd92a6a2c9b@googlegroups.com> References: <3cf38e87-800d-45cc-a5fb-1cd92a6a2c9b@googlegroups.com> Message-ID: Earth has just entered a very fast moving solar wind stream from a large gaping coronal hole. The solar wind stream is very broad and we will be inside the stream for many days, probably into next week. What this means to us is that propagation on all bands, especially 20 meters and above, will be dimenished. For those of you who check into the SATERN International 20 meter SSB net, you could do the service a favor by listening and passing relays on to the NCO on duty. The same could be said for the regional nets on 40 and 80 meters as well. The lower bands are not affected nearly as much as the upper bands but there likely will be some strange propagation effects. Try to listen and help the NCS as much as needed. Given the NOAA/SWPC predictions, we will likely see poor conditions until next weekend. Geomagnetic storms are likely to continue for that period of time as well. If you are a VHF/UHF fan, you may want to monitor the DX Clusters for auroral openings which are common during periods like this. Local groups will find this a good opportunity for 6 meters and above when the lower bands fade. We will continue to monitor the situation while active strong and severe weather is present across much of the U.S. Don't forget we are approaching hurricane season in about 10 weeks.
