As such, if you have a need or would like to share something interesting using that time, please let me know and we'll double-check the schedule and attempt to announce it (social media, during on-air nets, web-page, and email lists). Please keep in mind that the room will always support "social time" during the pre-meeting hour(+), and therefore we don't expect to have "organized" presentations with the pre-meeting time. (some items may be a better/best fit for a general meeting session) The general meeting this month (July 12th) will include a Clock Kit build, organized by Chrissy (KC8UFV). Please feel free to come early and use that time to get set up if you plan to build a kit. We'll see you on July 12th at the general meeting. 73, Rob - KV8P From zburns at zackburns.com Wed Jul 5 10:30:08 2017 From: zburns at zackburns.com (Zachary Burns) Date: Wed, 5 Jul 2017 10:30:08 -0400 Subject: [TMRA] Fwd: TMRA 2 meter transceiver In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Tim, Very Cool! You will need version 1.8.0 of the software which can currently only be found on sourceforge for download (somewhat beta version yet as it does have a few bugs yet). The official release on their website is supposed to have a few of the remaining bugs worked out. However, if you are like me, and don't want to wait, you can find it on sourceforge.com . A few notes on my experience with FT8, while trying it over my lunch hour today. 1. There is no time between transmissions because they are so fast (15 seconds). You just get a response in when you can and it will start right away if you are quick on it It appears to work well. My transmitter unkeys before the tones are done, but it doesn't appear to impact anything. (anyone else getting that phenomenon as well?) 2. At least in Windows 10, my signal strength bar is way off now. It is much higher for the same signals than it used to be and shows "red" a lot. Hopefully they fix that. (Anyone else experience that?) 3. This software has mixed up a few of the frequencies where some of the modes are now found. FT8 is found on 14.074 where it controlled my radio to (different from what JT first mentioned), which is also where folks are using it on 20. However, on 6 meters, it moved JT65 to using 50.310? Really? Nobody is using it there. I'm wondering if there will be corrections/changes.:) 4. Contacts came through, and decodes worked quite well. I was able to make a few and there is already some DX working there. 5. QRZ.com does not yet include an FT8 mode to log with, so I have no idea what to log these contacts as. I notified the folks at QRZ.com to ask if they plan to add it. I'd imagine other software packages are in a similar boat. All in all, it worked good though! 73 - Rob KV8P From styx at toast.net Tue Jul 11 19:33:18 2017 From: styx at toast.net (Joel Retholtz) Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2017 23:33:18 +0000 Subject: [TMRA] New WSJT-X Digital Mode - FT8 In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Rob.... I got a chance to play with FT8 today at about 2:30pm. FT8 feels like a cross between HF Digital and a video game. It is definitely quick. I made nine contacts in a very short period of time ranging from Washington State, Florida, New York and even one in Ireland. Answering or sending a CQ is a bit of a chore. By the time you respond it is already 1/3 of the way through the next transmission.... after that the video game portion kicks in. Position your mouse over db or R-db, wait for the red colored response and click.... then do the same for the RRR or 73. Just make certain you receive a RRR before you click the 73. If not just wait and the program will send their signal report a second time and proceed from there. Surprisingly there appear to be a great many Hams with the required eye/hand coordination as most of the QSO's went back and forth on the first try. I am using WSJT-X 1.80 rc1, JTAlert (need version 2.9.10) and Log4OM. JTAlert logs to Log4OM correctly indicating a FT8 contact. Log4OM then attempts to log to a number of online sources. QRZ is showing all of the contacts as FT8 and so far I have received 3 confirmations. eQSL does not yet handle the new mode. HRDLog is logging correctly. Club log is simply showing it as another digital mode (the same way they log all of the other digital modes). When I attempted to upload my QRZ log to LOTW it would not upload any of the FT8 entries. I am not certain the frequencies have been finalized yet. There were some complaints that on 20m they should have gone above the JT9 frequency where it is less crowded rather than below JT65 when Hams using Oliver, etc like to hang out. All in all, where I have been known to doze off waiting for a JT65 exchange, there is no chance of that happening on FT8. My goal is to achieve WAS with FT8 in one hour.... what are the chances of that? ;) 73 - Joel AC8WS From sharpe at buckeye-express.com Wed Jul 12 15:00:35 2017 From: sharpe at buckeye-express.com (Rick Sharpe) Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2017 15:00:35 -0400 Subject: [TMRA] Help needed! Transmissions, set to get under way around 2125 UTC, will feature 12 images from past and present ARISS activities. The SSTV signal should be available nearly anywhere on the globe at some point during the event. "Starting with our first meeting in November 1996, our joint operations on *Mir*, becoming the first operational payload on ISS in November 2000, to our [more than 1,100] school contact (so far), ARISS's accomplishments have been tremendous," ARISS International Chair Frank Bauer, KA3HDO, said, in first announcing the SSTV event last. "We have touched the lives of many and inspired and educated countless students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math careers." The event plans to use a computer on the ISS Russian Segment, which stores images that are then transmitted to Earth using the onboard Kenwood TM-D710 transceiver, the ARISS announcement explained. Those receiving the images can post them for public viewing. SSTV signals will be transmitted on 145.80 MHz using FM. The SSTV mode is expected to be PD120, with PD180 as a possible second option. Free SSTV decoder software is available on the Internet. ARISS asked educators to consider ways in which they might use this opportunity to inspire their students by having them take advantage of this chance to capture images directly from space to their computers. All ARISS events are subject to change at any time. News and updates are on the ARISS website , the AMSAT website , the AMSAT-BB , the ARISS Facebook page , and the ARISS Twitter feed, @ARISS_status. We will post more information about this event as more information becomes available. Please reserve the date! *Ohio State Parks on the Air:* TMRA is sponsoring, and has secured the Maumee Bay State Park for operation as W8H during the 10th Annual Ohio State Parks On The Air (OSPOTA) Contest Operation on September 9th. Operations setup will begin at 8am and the contest starts at 10am. The contest will run on SSB on 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10m only. This will be a unique event for TMRA in that it will be our first attempt at setting up and using all free standing antennas (no trees used), to help test our strengths in operating under no tree support conditions. Also, setup and operations efforts are expected to be organized by some of our newest operators, with support from our long time elmers (as needed). This should provide some great learning opportunities for everyone involved. This event organizer for TMRA is Toby Hiteshew (KE8CZO) who is available for sign-up and info at KE8CZO at gmail.com. Toby will be providing more details over the coming month and will be presenting more specifics on the plans during the August 2017 TMRA meeting.
