[TMRA] high power resistors

Thanks Stan,

I looked on line and some folks were using space heaters for load banks.
Too expensive.
I wound up purchasing 4 hot water tank heater elements ($9:50 ea. at
Menards) 120vac 1000w, that when connected in parallel, equaled the
resistance I needed, about 1.8 ohms, and exceeded the wattage required, so
I was safe. I connected them up today and test it. The power supply could
deliver both a dead nuts 40vdc, but a steady current of 22 amps, ran the
test for 35 minutes, never wavered.
The cost of the heater elements was cheap compared to the cost of the
power supply. I'm going to do a news letter article showing how to
determine what voltage and wattage you need to build the 'Poor Man's Load
Bank'. You can test any power supply that way.

I believe I've heard of salt water being used as high power "dummy
loads." I think they were talking about for testing high power
transmitters, but it might, maybe, be used for this???
Perhaps a Google search would turn up something.

 Just a thought....

All,
Does anyone have a high power very low Ohm resistor load bank I could
borrow to 'proof' a used Sorenson power supply I bought on line? Anything
from 1 to 10 ohm, 1500 - 3000 watt rating. I'm testing 0 - 50 VDC at 0 -
60 Amps. Just need to know the power supply can deliver the needed
current
at the specified voltage. I could parallel higher resistances if I had
multiple resistors and lower wattages.
