Yaesu's change with the specifications of the DR-1X power output is disappointing. It does not provide confidence in Yaesu's technical expertise with repeaters. We purchased our repeaters as 50 watt repeaters. There had been much discussion about the 50 watts and 100% duty cycle but any repeater that can run 50 watts has to assume 100% duty cycle. Just how long is a QSO or net....? The 50 watts at 50% duty cycle is technically silly for a repeater.... 50 watts for 12 hours then no activity for 12 hours...? 50 watts for 15 minutes then no activity for 15 minutes...? We were also told (right or not) that if the repeater running 50 watts became too hot then the power was reduced...Correct or not....? Very disappointed Yaesu... However that said they are a good repeater with a very sensitive receiver and great FM audio (and digital). I would like to see the basic repeater and its internal controller have more flexibility so you don't have to interface a separate controller. Reading all the problems with doing this makes it appear for many as just too hard. Regards Will VK6UU Reply to sender . Reply to group . Reply via Web Post . All Messages (8) . Wed Apr 1, 2015 12:05 pm (PDT) . Posted by: k9eq Stef, There are no adjustments in the radio. Calibration is performed electronically via the interface port. Yaesu has not published the "Technical Supplements" for the Fusion radios, and thus has not published the calibration procedures. There are limits on how low a power amplifier should be set. 5 watts to 50 watts is a large dynamic range. Reducing the power by any significant amount could result in instabilities or other unintended consequences. My suggestion is to attenuate the transmit signal as needed. The "poor man's" way of doing this is to use cable with high loss, such as RG-58/U. I have an Icom FR6000 which does provide a tool with their programmings software to calibrate the radio. I too wanted to adjust the power down. I know this is a different radio, but the Tx became unstable at about 2.5 watts. I ended up setting it at 3.9 to provide sufficient safety margin. Not much of a drop from 5 watts. Hope this helps, Chris, K9EQ Reply to sender . Reply to group . Reply via Web Post . All Messages (7) . Top ^ <#toc> 3a Re: Here's a first.... Wed Apr 1, 2015 12:07 pm (PDT) . Posted by: k9eq Ken, The display is controlled by one of the two display boards mounted on top of each other. The back board, which you can easily see, is for the Tx and doesn't actually have a display connected to it. (I have no idea why it needs to be there.) The Tx, Rx, and both display boards have boot/run switches that need to be in the run position. Boot is used to update firmware. So far we have only updated firmware for the Rx, which contains the repeater controller. Some things to try: 1. Verify that all connections are solid, particularly from the Rx to the front display panel. 2. Try reloading the firmware (1.00Z) which is installed in the Rx. 3. I think this will work, but do this at your own risk: Connect an FTM-400 display to the Rx and see if it works. If it does but the repeater doesn't, you at least know where the problem is. At any case, it's likely you will be returning the unit to Yaesu for repair if #1 and #2 don't work. I have 3 DR-1(X) machines and have never seen this problem. The lack of the start up sounds indicates to me that the Rx controller is at fault. However, if the Rx is not able to work with the display board, that will cause the Rx not to work. 73, Chris, K9EQ (You didn't break anything whilst exploring, did you?) Whatever you do, don't plug or unplug things while the system is powered! Especially the display boards! That's a good way to brick the repeater. Reply to sender . Reply to group . Posted by: "jim" usswitek Ken, The only difference we have noted is that pin 8 (discriminator output) is not. It is squelched, filtered audio. No CTCSS comes out so using an external decoder will not work. The wiring to the RX section in the beta and production units is completely different. Some of the wires are soldered directly to IC pins and we haven't had the desire to let the magic smoke out trying to find an alternate source of audio. I came into the shop this morning to see the display a solid white color. The receiver seems to be working ok and the transmitter is making power but not on its programmed channel - it should be on 442.675 but it is now actually doing so on 442.700. Also, we're unable to make any changes as the touch screen appears to be dead as well. A power cycle doesn't correct the problem and we notice the usual "start up" tone sequence is not heard in the local speaker either. Anyone else experienced a similar failure? The original patents are about to expire, but like any company there are newer patents on improvements to AMBE and Fusion uses the newer methods which are implemented in the AMBE-3000 series (and their firmware license equivalents). DVSI is known to enforce their intellectual property rights. The AMBE chip is just a component like the microprocessors and other patented components in your radios. Reply to sender .
