WB8NQW received the following request:
Hi Bob,
My name is Chris, call sign: WE8ST. I found your email on the Wood Co.
Amateur Radio club's website, I hope it was ok to write. I'm a member of
the Findlay Radio Club. I am the head of event communications this year for
the Susan Komen Race for the Cure in Findlay this year as well. You may
have heard that last year was the first year that Komen came to Findlay to
hold it's first race there. Last year was quite the success and this year
they anticipate even more participation than last year. If memory serves me
correctly, there were over 3,000 participants there last year. There were
many local and regional sponsors, news crews, etc. there for the event. All
in all it was a fairly high profile event, at least for our area.
I am reaching out to you to see if you might spread the word to your club
members (or anyone with a radio license) about the race, and to ask if
anyone may be interested in helping us out with radio communications during
the event.
The details are: The event is on Saturday, Sept. 27. We will have our
communications trailer set up near the Marathon Oil building on Main St.
(exact location TBD). This will be our base station and all operators in
the field will report to net control in the trailer through a simplex
frequency. The radio volunteers will be expected to be ready to go by
around 7AM. It is an early morning thing, I know. We should be able to
supply a couple HT's if needed, but if at all possible, it would be great
for any volunteers to bring their own radios with them (and spare
batteries!). Parking may be a bit tricky, as you might imagine with several
thousand people roaming around downtown Findlay that day. So more than
likely people would have to park a few blocks away and walk either to our
trailer, or strait to their assigned location. The main areas we would need
covered would be points along the race route (radio ops here would serve as
the communication point person for likely several race volunteers already
placed along the race route). It's also possible we may need a few radio
ops to shadow several race committee staff. They would just follow their
person around and serve as the communication link for them as needed. Then
I am told there may be several radio persons needed to be stationed at
several parking areas, as well as to be on a couple/few shuttle buses.
Like I said, I have a number of people already signed up from our club but
I am feeling like a bit of additional help would certainly be welcome. So
if you choose to, feel free to spread the word to your club members for
anyone interested in helping out. I have maps and any info we would need at
hand I can share. If I was able to I would chime in to the net you guys
normally have on your repeater and share the word there as well, but
unfortunately can't at the moment.
Thanks in advance for your help with this and feel free to respond back
with any questions or willing volunteers.
73, Chris WE8ST
