Subject: W8VSB Karl Koella
HI
I just found the Mobile Association website and read the history and
found Karl Koella's name (W8VSB).
I found your email on the website and thought I'd add a little to the
history.
I'll be doggoned if I didn't go to ham radio classes in the Red Cross
building in 1953. The classes were being taught by Karl Koella who
(as your history says) also started the TMR along with his buddy
'Red' and others. Karl Koella was singularly responsible for dozens
of hams getting their license, me being one. Karl always had a group
of guys hanging around in his basement on Oak Grove street with Karl
showing us how to build radios.
I got my Novice license in '53 and General in '54 but didn't join the
TMR because I wasn't old enough to drive :) But I did make a bicycle
Morse Code mobile that summer with a hand key strapped to my leg.
I lost track of Karl after I got married and was sorry to hear he
died in '99.
Thanks for your kind attention
Regards,
KB1YOO (previously W8PID)
