Hi Brian,

Well it depends on how you wish to participate in skywarn.

You can do spotting. Going out to watch the sky and report what you see
during skywarn activation. For that you need a 2 meter mobile or handie
talkie so you can communicate with the net. It also would be a good idea to
attend the skywarn training session (free) in March as well.

It is also a good idea to get registered with the local ARES group,
L.C.A.R.E.S.. They meet regularly once a month on the fourth Saturday at St.
Lukes Hospital in Maumee at 9:00 AM in the basement. All amateurs are
welcome to attend. There is no membership fee. The IS-700 course is
recommended. It is a free course you can do at your leisure.

Skywarn and ARES are pretty close in existence. Most of the same people that
participate in ARES also participate in skywarn however, you do not have to
participate in both.

Attending the meetings is a good way to stay informed and also check into
the National Traffic Net at 6:40 PM.
It is on every evening on the frequency of 146.940 or 442.950.

It is good to learn to pass traffic. Doing that also makes you a better
communicator and allows you to understand better protocol for nets and net
control.

Hope that helps Brian.
