I recently came across a neat photo of the "bomb shelter" communications
center in the state office building in Augusta, Maine.   I sent it to JP
for the TMC archives but you can see it here:

The remarkable thing is that the original TMC gear, including one of the
100 or so GPT-750(B) combinations with the RTM plate modulator, was all
still intact when  this photo was taken in 1981.  Newer gear including a
Drake 4-line and some kind of fancy CB base station have been added,
probably as a convenience for operators after SSB became the norm.   A
pair of GPR-90RX receivers,  SSB exciter and converter, and other TMC
gear can be seen.  It would be interesting to know what was in the
left-hand cabinet of what many hams could consider to be the ultimate
operating desk ;-)

There are photos of other Civil Defense installations that had a smaller
console containing a GPR-92,  MSR sideband converter,  and FFR receiver,
with a SBE-1K transmitter alongside.   Wonder why Maine went with this
deluxe setup?

It's also interesting that the state of Maine felt the need to educate
people on the art of building "atom bomb shelter" as late as 1981!
