The idea of using a Variac to "bring the voltage up slowly"
is rather misleading. What you need is a way to tell if the item
begins to draw excessive current right away and be able to shut
it off. A "dim bulb" tester is a better way. A google search will
find how to make one. In general a hand close to the power switch
or plug will do as well. Its likely the thing works just fine. I
think the GPR-92 has a solid state power supply, a little less
forgiving than a tube supply but tube supplies start delivering
current pretty fast. I am not sure if its properly fused but I
think a handbook is available on line. The filter capacitors will
reform if its just left running for a couple of days. If it were
mine my curiosity would have the better of me and it would
dominate me until I had played with it and probably aligned it.

Turns out he had retired from the NSA AND THEY HAD BOUGHT THE GPR92 for a special project and after it was finished he inherited it. I brought it home and put it on a shelf and had no idea if it’s value. It was many years later I learned of its rarity. It is serial number 20095. I hv never plugged it up. I need to put it on a variac and try it.
