I wonder if the new bearings are good. A very long time ago I
used to rebuild tape recorders. I used Georg Mueller bearings.
They were recommended by Studer and I found them to be the
smoothest of all. From a quick google search they are still
available. I had problems with SKF and others that ran rough,
could be detected on the flutter tests. Make a simple test on
your new bearings, just pinch the center with your fingers and
spin the bearing. If you can feel any sort of roughness you need
some other bearing. Don't assume the bearings are good because
they are new. Also, they should be exactly on axis with the
shafts and both bearings and shafts must fit snugly. Rumbling is
typical of worn or galled bearings.
It also possible the rumble is due to the motor "hunting" but
only certain kinds of motors do this so it may not be relevant to
yours.
