In the opposite direction many grid dip meters will work for testing
crystals. My Millen works well. You must make an adapter that fits the
coil socket, be careful of using screws that might stretch the contacts.
When you connect the crystal work the tuning capacitor across its range
to find where the crystal oscillates best. The oscillation will be
displayed on the current meter. Usually there is enough output to to
work a counter and certainly a radio receiver will pick it up. The
setting of the GDO capacitor will give some idea of the correct load cap
for the crystal.
