[TMC] A sort of test message

Richard,

That would be the GPT-750B. TMC evidently made quite a few of them. You
can, for example, see the production line in the mid-fifties in the photo

http://tmchistory.org/tmc_history/photos/tmc_people/tony_faiola_gpt750.jpg

in which a young Tony Faiola is leaning over one of the transmitters on the
production line. Tony told me that these things were selling "like
hotcakes" at the time, so much so that TMC had to built an entire new plant
on Waverly Ave in Mamaroneck to handle the production of these and the
newer SBT-1K's, GPT-10K/40k/200K units in 1956.

The transmitters in the photos are GPT-750B-1's. Most of the GPT-750's
that are now in collectors' hands are -2's, the later production. The -2
version mainly involved the re-engineering of the cabinet, because the
heavy plate transformer was causing the -1 cabinets to bend/deform during
shipping. The transformer is indeed a heavy beast. The -2 cabinet is the
proverbial brick outhouse.

Evidently TMC sold a great number of the AM versions of the GPT-750 to
AT&T, where they were used in ship-to-shore telephone service. These were
later surplussed, but AT&T must have been extremely diligent about
scrapping them, as I've only ever heard of one of these units having made
it to a private collection. In nearly 20 years of TMC collecting I've only
ever seen one of the modulators, and it's sitting in my shack.. :) There
may be a couple/three of these things still left on what's left of the
Greenland Ice Sheet.. another story!

Richard: if you're seriously interested in a GPT-750, please get in
touch. I know where there is one for sale here in NC. It's a "D" model
(RTTY), probably ex-FBI, but it would not be difficult to convert it to SSB
service.
