More generally, the design of electronic equipment is an exercise in
industrial sculpture. With electronics, unlike purely mechanical stuff,
the designer has considerable freedom in the placement of controls on the
front, so there is the opportunity to arrange them in an eye-pleasing
manner. The two-dial superhet receiver offers an opportunity to place
two large dials and knobs symmetrically.

There should be an art museum devoted to the sculpture of utilitarian
objects. There is the branch of art called Industrial Design that is
devoted to making useful things esthetically pleasing. Presumably the
ancient peoples made things like pottery to be used rather than to sit
in museums.
