Well, I fired up all the pieces of my AN/URT-19 (SBT-1K) this
afternoon, and all the smoke stayed in the wires and RF went flying
out into the aether!
Over the last months I'd been slowly reviving the VOX, SBE-9, and
PAL-1K but hadn't fired up the HV to the RFD - Today John Poulton
K4OZY watched meters as I gingerly turned on the HV and tuned up into
a dummy load. When all seemed OK he then headed home to his TMC World
HQ to get on 75m and provide my first all-TMC QSO - I was using an
R-840/URR (GPR-90RX) as receiver.
He says the SBT-1K produced nice-sounding AM - I guess I got the
SBE-9 carrier re-insertion running OK after all. Great fun - I was
grinning like a madman! Many thanks to John for support,
encouragement, equipment, and documentation(!) - and thanks to others
here for info, help, and suggestions as I've been learning about and
restoring this rig.
Hurrah! Many things left to do - wire up a T/R relay (I was swapping
cables this afternoon), hook up a specrum analyzer, check out SSB
(have got some residual carrier), get the TIS-3 working and give RTTY
a try, etc. And then on to making cables and resurrecting the rack
full of AN/URA-30 synthesizer (SBG-1) and turning this into an
AN/FRT-70.
Best wishes and thanks to all for keeping the TMC spirit alive.
