Your thoughts about the bandwitch being off was close. I've not pinned it down yet but it's in the GPE exciter. Put some xtals in it and watched the output with a freq counter. When i doubled, went to the 4-8 mc band position, all i saw was 14 mc signal and that was with a 3646.5 kc xtal. Should have showed up as 7293. No 40 meter output. So now to dig in there and see why the 4-8 mc band isn't outputing the frequency it should be.

The fact that i couldn't tune anything on 40 with the amp was really disturbing. I just knew that i was getting the 2nd harmonic of 3646.5 out of the GPE. But now the next question is, why when i run a 40 meter frequency into the amp from the VOX, does the amp still not tune? If i go to the next band position on the AMP 8-12 Mc it works just fine. Funny that i would have two units go defective on the same band at the same time. Hope it's something simple.

The STE-5/U units are USB, AME, CW, MCW and a -20 db carrier position. Fired up one of them with the 11 mc xtal in it to see if it did anything. It does. Need to come up with some sort of variable attenuator to put inbetween the STE and the PAL-500. STE just drives the pants off the 500. Course i was running the signal into a dummy load.

just FYI
