Larry,
Gas filled rectifiers have very low forward voltage drops. For mercury
vapror, the forward drop is on the order of 10 to 15 volts and fairly
constant, as long as the tube is operated within its rated current.
High voltage solid state rectifiers are usually made up of a stack of
several diodes in series in order to reach the required peak reverse
breakdown voltage rating, with a forward voltage drop of about 0.7 volts
for each diode in the stack. When replacing mercury vapor rectidiers
with high voltage solid state rectifiers, its likely that the resulting
DC voltage will change only by a small percentage, and may actually be a
bit lower for solid state, depending on how many series diode junctions
are in the stack.
