Conveyor belt is designed to take considerable stress, it has chord plies like a tire. I can't think of how it'd be superior to a stiff rubber mat under a power hammer except maybe it doesn't have the same "bounce". I have a pair of moccasins with soles made from scrap conveyor belt that is designed to be both puncture and cut resistant and no skid. It's flexible, you could dance on nails and they don't slip on slimy rocks in a creek. I don't know how it'd work under a power hammer though.
Try searching "Conveyor Belting". Years ago an Anchorage hose and rubber supply built conveyor belts from the stands to belting. They had rems for sale near the front. The Alaska rubber branch here in Wasilla doesn't sell rems though there are a couple crates in the parking lot with bits of free stuff.
The last time I bought rubber belting I had to buy a slice off a roll and it wasn't cheap. Not horrible but not cheap.
I just did a search using the terms, "Conveyor belting, New Jersey" and got a boat load of hits all over the state.
A phone call to any one should answer your questions. I highly recommend you have the measurements you need when you call, conveyor belt may not be available wide enough to serve. Soooo, you'll need to buy rubber mat, sheet, etc. Whatever it's called. I go into the supply and point, it's so much easier than trying to memorize all the names different manufacturers come up with their version of the same basic thing.
Mud flap might work if it's large enough to fit your hammer.

Larry,
I don't know what conveyor belting is like. How does it compare to truck
mud flaps or other such materials? Can you point me to any info on-line?
