There is a certain amount of pleasure in reinventing the wheel.
I am pretty certain that all of us have done that. I seem to remember
discussions here that were little more than that.
I can understand the YouTube thing in this regard also.
Yes if the object is to become very proficient in as short a time as
possible YouTube is a waste of electrons.
If however you are like me, and it is the slow process of entertaining
myself while figuring things out, then it is about as useful as the
cursory readings of various books that started me out.
I have already had a full time day job, now a part time day job, that
keeps me in exercise and interested. When I first started I promised
each full time smith whose brain and techniques I plundered that I would
NEVER go into competition with them. For me this has always been about
the journey, followed as time and money allowed.
I am just guessing that for most that is the case.
Does that make me a dilettante?
If it does is that such a bad thing? At least I can look at a work and
truly appreciate how much went in to making it and perhaps what if any
shortcuts were taken.
Yes or No, I am content and grateful for the insights that I have
received from the people here over the years.
