[TheForge] An abrasive product to consider? Update

When I first reported to this group about these white sponges (possibly
melamine foam, if Graham Whaley is correct), I'd not had a need to try them
on iron.
They're sold for soap scum and the like and work well for it. They're
great at cleaning old grime from paint or plastic or metal surfaces,
including soft vinyl plastic. I also found it took grease off a washable
paint surface (gloss latex).
So today I was cleaning an old 3-ring binder and I noticed that the 3-ring
spine had some surface rust. The sponge took it right off. Therefore I dug
out an old steel can opener with some surface rust and found it would
remove the rust from that as well.
In each case, this was thin surface rust, not deep or flaky rust, so the
application is limited, but these sponges have the advantage that they do
no discernible damage to paint or plastic.
