[TheForge] Cheese is cold-short!

Several rifle barrel makers had failures especially in cold with sulphuric steels. The leaded steel have also been used by rifle makers and failed. For blackpowder they are ok. Recently someone here in Dallas dumped a hundred 2” by 10’ 41L50 bars for $10 a stick. I ended up with a couple, but no more because of the issues. The “L” means leaded and you will find shops that run screw machines and big Warner Swassey turret lathes have truckloads if it. There are spec sheets out there for almost all steels that will tell you what the iron is alloyed with and what the properties are.

These steels don't forge well, nor do they weld (arc) well either. Locally we can get free drops from a company making items for Snap On but it not worth working with even if it is free. Most of these steels I have seen are sold as bar stock for use in high speed machine centers or screw machine lathes.
