A standard tungsten bulb can last 22 years if you leave it on, carefully control the voltage fed to it and keep it in temperature controlled environment. There are real world examples. Same issues for an LED bulb. One of the notes below I believe was mine. The electronics get overheated and it is installation dependent to a degree. Big heavy heat sinks help. Quality control on the assembly line makes a difference as well as does quality components.

You will be hard pressed to find a bulb that cannot be replaced by an equivalent LED. Many retail stores and other workplaces have replaced their T style fluorescents with LED replacement bulbs. These companies would not be investing in LEDs if they did not believe in their benefits. The technology has improved greatly even in the last two or three years.

Retailers are selling for as little as 90 cents in some places. Their price compounded with their efficiency and other benefits makes them a no-brainer for me.

(I removed the authors) Florescent twist bulbs were a pain but the result of that "government over reach" is the current LED technology. If you haven't put them in your shops then you are working in the dark.

My son sells these and in some cases, the payback for these 20 year + bulbs is less than 10 months. He is selling to a lot of manufacturing. They have high bay lamps that replace the metal halite and other inefficient lighting.
