My shop glasses are slightly cratered by flux (power hammer & a large 
Damascus billet) - so barrier protection is highly recommended.  The 
main thing to worry about looking into a coal or a gas forge is sodium 
flare.  If your eyes get tried, you need more protection. I use a set of 
wrap-around medium density sunglasses - dark enough to allow me to watch 
the steel in the fire but still find my hammer at the anvil.  You only 
get one pair of eyes.....
