I welded up a 1/8" SS pot -- no mud -- it glowed red and the sides 
swelled out but it last a number of demos -- then I sold it <with full 
disclosure>.  Go thick - especially if mild steel & not SS or cast.  
Remember rust never sleeps and the heat is like steroids.
