I was approached recently by a person who is involved in a historical
reproduction and will need, for it, some rather pure iron in a large bar,
maybe 3" dia. I'm not sure yet what the length needed will be, but
probably it's less than 3 feet. I will provide more complete details to
this group when I receive an email from him with more information.
Modern pure iron would probably be more than acceptable for this use, but
I'm thinking that possibly low-carbon triply-refined wrought iron would be
more historically accurate.
For the moment, I'm hoping someone will know where to find such material.
My own thoughts run to old anchor chain, which I understand to be excellent
quality wrought iron.
Possibly smaller stock could be forge-welded together to form the piece,
but getting an existing 'monolithic' bar probably would be more desirable.
All comments and suggestions are welcome.
