I was think of the same possibility, Mike. It really is a smooth
transition from the face to the heel if it is welded together. Possibly
someone replaced the entire face. I wish I could track down who owned
this when it was in operation. The seller told me he had it laying
around his garage for 30+ years. He said in recent years he just used
it to chain to his ATV as a preventive measure against theft (didn't
work, they cut the chain!)
I will give him a call later in the week and see if he knows who
the previous owner was. At this point it's more of a curiosity as I'm
fully convinced it is usable as is.
Someone was definitely at the end of the heel with a torch. As
suggested, both it an the hardie hole look to be oxy-acetylene cut. I
might get the energy some day to smooth out the end of the heel with a
grinder, but right now I'm just looking for functionality, not to
restore it to look like new.
Final question for the group. This anvil has no pritchel hole.
While I will never make a horseshoe, it might be nice to add one at some
point. Can someone give me the approximate size?
