[TheForge] Coak and weird anvil

You have a Hay Budden anvil that has seen quite a lot of repair. For a
newbie it will be just fine. Looks like the tail was snapped off and they
welded a piece of steel onto the back to make a new tail. The edges look
built up, but how much I can't tell from your photos. Since the edges a very
crisp and it saw enough abuse to break the tail off I am making the
judgement of the edge build up. I have seen all sorts of anvil repairs work
and you have to remember the original broke, so in the future you may have
to weld it again. Keep an eye on the edges when forging on them and don't
use a sledge near the heel unless you really want to test the repair
(Remember it's your anvil now)
Good luck

Good evening, Chuck (and the others who replied)

I finally got it into my shed. I cleaned of the rust a bit, but it
needs more work. There are 7-8 photos. They are on my web site here:

I tried to describe everything I could see. I will try the ball
bearing test as well as the other suggestions. It will do for what I want,
I think (hope springs eternal!) However, it isn't a pristine antique anvil
and I'm glad I didn't pay the full price. Will be interested in what you
experts think.
