1728/5 x .8 = 276.48 BPM. A standard American 60 cycle electric motor turns
1728 RPM. Of course I suppose a few RPM +/- is no biggy. Figuring gear
ratios is exactly the same thing as figuring leverage. Literally a compound
lever.
If you want 375 BPM as a final you need to reduce 1728 at a 4.608:1 ratio.
the easy way to do this is put a 2.17" pully on the motor and run the belt
to the final on the hammer. . . Wait for it guys! <grin> OR put a 2.17"
rubber wheel on the motor shaft and put the motor on a hinged mount so
gravity pulls it out of contact with the final pully, your treadle will
press the "primary" (drive wheel on the motor) into contact with the "final"
pully on the hammer.
Same as a tire hammer without having to mess with old tires. Remember
entropy rules so the fewer steps in a transmission the more efficient.

Subject: [TheForge] Little Giant / pulley / rpm / ???
Good evening kids,
I am setting up a nice 25# Little Giant hammer and i have some questions.
This hammer came with a 1-1/2 hp. motor connected to a speed reducer.
The motor turns at 1725 rpm, connected to a reducer that is 5:1. The output
of the reducer is connected to an 8" flat belt pulley and the hammer has a
10" flat belt pulley..........
Of course the question is, How fast will the hammer be turning if I use this
set up?
I don't recall ever seeing a hammer set up in such a fashion, on the other
hand I haven't seen everything by a long shot. So why do you think that the
hammer was set up like this?
In the book, "The Little Giant Powerhammer" by Richard Kern it says that the
speed should be around 375 rpm.
Thanks,
dave m
