A friend once came to me for help with his VW bug that made a terrible
howling noise when started as I was at that time a Foring-gen Car Guru.
Bad main bearings? Fried clutch?  Help?

So over to his place, start the car. HOWWL!  Off. I put my hand down
ostentatiously into the space between the engine and the fire wall,
grimaced a bit and made to struggle with something, withdrew my hand.
Start car.  Purrs like a kitten.  Bonus points for my Guru status.

But I had to show him: a candy bar wrapper stuck in the cooling fan
housing.

Check the simple stuff first.
