[TheForge] Hello all, or hello again

Speaking of old, I remember that Frosty likes good stories, so here's one about the oldest working smith that I knew. Mr. Sam Bray, Walpole, Massachusetts was born in Wales and sent to America by his parents at age 14 to apprentice as a blacksmith. He eventually owned his mentor's shop. I met him when I moved here from Chicago, he was in his 70's and still smithing daily at his shop - had a striker on Saturdays. We became good friends and although I thought at the time that I knew most everything, he taught me tons that I did not know about working metal.
A dozen years or so pass and Sam is working alone in his shop and "three punks" (twenty some year old bullies) came in and demanded money and started pushing him around (Sam was then 83 years old). When the police arrived, one of the punks was out cold, did not regain consciousness for several days, while the other two, one with a broken arm and shoulder, and one with a split head and missing teeth were on the floor with Sam sitting on top of them. Don't mess with old blacksmiths! Sam worked until he was 91, great guy.
After Sam died, Blacksmith Jay Cadero bought the shop and moved it to another part of Walpole where he still operates it.
Now you know everything,
-Mike Schermerhorn

I'm with you on that, the alternative to old is just too boring.
