What a surprise! Frosty, Bruce, Larry, & Rob, I remember each of you, thanks for your notes. Yes, we tried to get pure iron going here in the US, didn't work out, but our efforts in Europe have made pure iron the only option (to wrought iron) when restoring historical iron work and such, still sold in France at our then sister company.
I spent last weekend in Maine at the annual Open House of the Lie-Nielsen Tool Works, high end hand tool maker. Nic Westerman, blacksmith from England makes their hand axes for them and did a demo of axe forging with TV Woodwright Roy Underhill doing the striker duties, very nice work - and followed by a lobster cookout!!
Nic and I agreed that the hand tool woodworking guys reminded us of our blacksmith meets with everyone friendly and helpful to those who wanted to learn.
Good to be back,

I
have just rejoined theforge and wanted to introduce myself. Involved
in
smithing since 1965, was member of theforge in the early days of
it's
existence - early '90's until around year 2000. Worked in the
specialty
steel industry for most of this time as a tool steel metallurgist and
have a
small rolling mill components manufacturing company. My expertise is
mostly
in heat treating (salt bath & induction) and metals selection for
specific
applications. Don't do much smithing these days due to sore arm
syndrome.
Nice to be back.
Regards,
Mike
