Terry,

I know that it is fun to over design simple things, but they have been 
making bird houses and bird feeders from lumber for a long time with 
generally good results.  If you want them to last longer you can paint 
them or use better wood like redwood which resists rot.

I think that a hollow log would be fun to make but probably wouldn't 
last any longer than one made from lumber.

It's a sad day when I'm the voice of reason.
